Rural Garages

One for Seth and others who like nostalgic pictures of a bygone era that is fast disappearing from our landscape. Rural garages that have been largely superseded by Supermarkets and multiples.  :(

Don,t think you would be allowed to put pumps/tanks so near a thatched roof these days. ::)

Still plenty like those in Rural Spain (thankfully due to large distances)

I remember many garages like that and not that long ago in Britain.

My mum refuses to get her own petrol and only uses attended service garages.

All seem to be in the same bit of the country. Most little garage like that have all become car washes run by illegals. :)

There are a few independent garages left in Birmingham, alas they can not compete on prices of fuel. Obviously the bigger operators can bulk buy and get a far lower net price per litre.
Another thing that usually finishes off the smaller garages is when the tanks become unusable due to age and they cost a small fortune to replace.

Majority in Swindon (and there are loads of them) are run by 'legals'.

Swindon had a clamp down a couple of months ago....with the police and whatever agency it is, visiting all the hand car washes.....iirc i think about 4 peeps got arrested for being 'illegal'  :y

If they pay tax and NI is a different subject  ::)

We still have one near us.  They charge the same for fuel as the local Tescos, have a post office and a well stocked shop. They are always busy!  :y

Think there's still a couple where the pumps appear to be outside a "house" on the side of the road - one at Kimbolton and one at Olney.  Are they still there I wonder ???

My parents local garage is in that set of photos.

Pictures can be deceptive...
