I've searched the forums and there seem to be two sizes for the v6 with air con aux/serpentine/fan belt -  6PK2030 and  6PK2020, the difference being 10mm. 

The vaux part number often quoted, 93181720, seems to be a 6PK2020.  There are some references to the 2020 being difficult to fit and straining the tensioner, with the 2030 much easier to fit (being longer).  Is there a definitive answer on this?  The current one on my car is a 2020, probably the original, but I am thinking a 2030 will be easier to get on and stress the tensioner less.

I think the difference is caused by variations in the size of the alternator pulley.

As long as the tensioner is not up against the stop in normal running the length is OK.

To get it fitted you might need to drop the belt into the grooves on the tensioner and grooved pulleys first and then slide the belt on to the water pump.

Just had a flashback from the cambelt dvd... 2.5/3.0 v6 have two idler pullies, whereas 2.6/3.2 have only one

Funny, that's what I was thinking, and not sure if the belt is dependant on engine number?

All Omega V6s have two cambelt idlers and one tensioner. On most V6s both idlers are adjustable. On later facelift V6s the idler on the run down to the crank pulley is fixed.

This thread is discussing the auxiliary belt. All the V6s have one tensioner and no (zero) idlers on the aux belt.

BTW if it stretches 10mm then take it back & ask for some new knicker elastic.

That much I understood but on the dvd Mark does go into the Aux belt a bit, having slept since then I have clearly remembered it all ass backwards

The standard belt for a V6 is 2020 mm long - standard way of fitting it is as AndyH says above - fit into all grooved pulleys, slide over smooth water pump pulley and tension.  Easy, never had a problem fitting one this way.

Why start off with an oversize belt?

I think that just confirms that there are two different lengths.

Vauxhall part no for Omega V6 aux belt (with a/con) is 93181720.  That is a 6 rib belt 2020mm long.  Not sure where a 2030mm belt comes into it (sems to be for Merc).

Accept that there may have been past issues with pattern 2020 belts (Autovaux mentioned who specify a 6rib 2020 belt), but have fitted a number of 2020 belts to V6 Omegas over the years without any difficuly or subsequent issue.  However they were all genuine Vx parts and the use of pattern parts in this instance may not be sensible.

My advice is to stick with the part specified by Vauxhalls, who obviously spent time and effort in reaching a suitable belt specification

Which one though? If the OPs car has the larger alternator pulley then it needs the longer belt.

Which one though? If the OPs car has the larger alternator pulley then it needs the longer belt.

But does it?  According to his first post he has a 2020 fitted, probably orginal fitting

He seems to think it may be difficult to fit the correct belt and feels a longer one may be easier to get on.  Surely the correct answer is to fit the correct belt in the correct manner

Read it.  If you are unable to fit the standard belt, why don't you just buy a bigger one - thats the outcome of that post
