TBH, I'd recommend a couple of day meets first, to test the water :y

Personally it's the 2 big camping meets I concentrate on because they're both a long way from home for me ::)

Title: Re: meet in wales
Post by: tunnie on 19 October 2011, 14:14:12
what do u mean by day meets

a meet in the day time, no camping or over-night stays.

Be better to establish a meet first before adding in over-night stays.

Hmmmmmm ..........

Been giving this post some thought :-\
I've previously had the idea of organising a South Wales meet - even had two very suitable locations sorted (and one of 'em had a ramp/workshop!). However, I personally feel that the annual Newent bash suffices perfectly - and it's only just over an hour's drive away for us South Walians!

However, if Big Yin wants to give it a go, then I'd be very happy to support his quest, all being well of course.
I'd suggest going for a one day meet to test the water initially.

Point to note: I was the only South Walian member to attend Newent 2011 :o

Good luck :y

I haven't apologised to you for that yet Seth, I'm really sorry for that - I had my deposit down and day off booked and then work decided that I could either have a Saturday off when my daughter was due a small op, or Newent - not both  >:(

I was really gutted, so once again, apologies

Exactly Pete - it takes us just over 90 minutes to get to Newent with the caravan in tow! ;)

However, as I stated in Reply 17, the OP's idea is certainly worthy of support - and I'd be happy to lend such :y

I am, I think it's a good place to start, we'll just get our cars together, have a bit of food and drink and a good chat, and if it's a success it could lead to a cambelt meet or similar. Let's keep it small and simple to start with though  :y

Be nice to have it soon, on a Sunday in a car park somewhere, any suggestions? A burger tan would be nice in the cold or in a country pub so we could sit inside for a bit. I've only met a couple of people off the forum as well, I'd like to put a few faces to names.
Not many of us in Wales though, we need a few members to make it happen

I know a man ........ who just happens to run an establishment that does superb Sunday lunches for well under a tenner all-in ;)
Anyone want me to have a word with him?
There's several suitable car parks in the locality too, come to think of it. Good access from all main routes too!

Spud: Where are you located, mate?

Yes, let's do it, even if not everybody's not willing/able to come, it'll still be worth doing for a few hours, perhaps we could discuss where to hold a bigger meet next time then eh?

Okay then, what d'ya reckon on bringing the wives and kids?

Or do we make it a 'men only' sort of gathering?

Saturday or Sunday?
Sunday seems to be the most popular choice - thoughts welcomed though! ;)

Don't know about ant of the rest of you, but my missus has absolutely zero interest in cars or the forum so I'd spare her this time. I've never been to a meet either though, so when I've been once, I'll persuade her next time  :)

Sunday would be easiest for me tbh

Point taken Johnny!

I'll pop over to the museum in the morning, and report back ASAP.
Will also have a word with 'the man' regarding some food too.

We could also incorporate a convoy up to the spectacular Bwlch summit for some excellent photographic opportunities overlooking the Rhondda valley. Food for thought .......... ?

Oh, and mountain biking: The Afan Forest Park is a world-renowned venue - that's official! ;)

Watch this space! :y

Sunday seems to be the best day for a meet-up ............ yes? :-\

Just checked my diary, and I'm presently free on Sunday 4 December, though appreciate that others may not be available on this date.
What's everyone's feelings on this point?

Before finalising a venue, what's the concensus among members regarding the proceedings on the day?
Maybe a purely 'social' get-together, with hot drinks and a bite to eat, a few photos etc - a sort of 'keep it simple to test the water' affair possibly?
Again, comments welcomed! ::)
Title: Re: meet in wales
Post by: jonnycool on 10 November 2011, 19:56:23
I'm free on 4th December, I think a social get-together for a few hours with hot  food and perhaps a beer or half would be great as a starting point. There aren't  many of us  in Wales so it'd be great if we could get as many of us as we could together. I'm easy as regards venue, anywhere in south Wales is doable for me  :)

J36 is for Sarn Services, yes ........ though I've got somewhere else nearby in mind, and am awaiting confirmation at this point ::)
If this venue is unavailable, then I've also got suitable alternative possibilities pencilled-in too, and once it's finalised will post-up details and a 'confirmed list' ;)

Whatever the venue and judging by the replies, Sunday 4 December is the day! :y

Title: Re: meet in wales
Post by: Plomien on 12 November 2011, 10:43:19
the dates coming up the 4th of december is going to be best for me due to othe commitments. If you want to create a poll you can set one up bigyin but my dates are somewhat limited as i work shifts.
Where in south wales are you?
At the moment there has been only a couple who have shown interest in the meet and with the time of year the weather could change very quickly and none of would be able to get anywhere if it is like last winter.
It may be worth looking at a mini meet for now and look at a larger one for next year when the weather improves maybe april, may or june time
Title: Re: meet in wales
Post by: bored bigyin54 on 12 November 2011, 11:18:54

I'm in the same situation, and agree that a mini-meet is sensibly the way forward here, all things considered.
If anyone wishes to post a Poll, then they're free to do so of course.

Still, there's three weeks to go, so maybe other members will declare an interest in the interim. ;)

Big pit would be a bit too far out for myself especially with it being a small meet and you also have to request permission to use the parking area.
The miners museum would be fine, I believe Seth had made contact there to see about use of the Car park.

Is there something so detestable about the Rhymney Valley that nobody wants to go near it,it's the same with the media,
any WELSH NEWS is always about Rhondda or Swansea valleys,Rhymney valley is always avoided

If you look at the geographical spread of our modest membership in South Wales, it's quite understandable why the chosen venue rapidly gained acceptance.

I can't find any reference to a suitable Rhymney Valley venue within this thread, and certainly have no issues with this area - a goodly number of my colleagues live and work there. I simply can't see a correllation between your comments and the chosen venue.

I would have gone anywhere in South Wales for the meet, including anywhere in the Rhymney valleys, I know plenty of people around there and have loads of family all over there, but only Seth was prepared to bite the bullet and actually take the time to put a venue forward and then discuss it with the venue to prepare them and inform the OOF members about the facilities and prices.

The comments about being too far for anyone in South Wales are pretty lame really, it's smack in the middle  ::)

I've even offered to pick up one member on the day and bring him to the meet at my expense, which was flatly turned down  :-\

So thank you Seth, look forward to meeting you and everyone else at the meet

Jon

I'd be up for that, and apologies to those members, but we wanted to keep this one simple for now, and discuss the next one at the meet. It'd be good to meet up one day though :y

well you wanted some of us to travel the distance you won't drive yourself plus a further 15 miles on top so expecting others to drive further out is a bit unfair I think.
Lifts were also offered as well to get you to the exisiting meet which you turned down.

Post by: Plomien on 24 November 2011, 16:04:10
Yes the current meet suits me better but you missed my point:

You won't drive to where the current meet is as it is too far.
You want myself (and others) to drive past where you live to meet a further 15 miles on top of what you yourself won't drive.

Where did that come from?  ??? ???

I replied to this:

If people had voted for it and said yes it would have been there, no "higher management" deciding venue, its chosen by the people who want to go!

Its very hard to establish a meet, quite a few have tried before. Had 20 people say yes, but over the time people drop off, and its just a couple of people in the end, sometimes they just fizzle out.

A location has to be chosen which appears suitable for most, one place might be suitable for one person, but not for everyone.

Looks like a location has been picked, once you get one or two meets done, you can think of other locations. But you may have to go somewhere you are not used to help establish a meet.

You also might have to go somewhere "you have been before"  ::)

Right, this thread is getting a bit long-winded and boring now, what a load of crap over a simple meet  >:(

Bigyin's pissed off because he brought up the subject of a Wales meet, took a bit long over it so Seth took over with a suggestion of his own, and now he won't go because of nothing more than sour grapes. The subject of distance is not even the issue.

WE GET IT, can we stop going on about it now?

I've been polite to everyone concerned so far, I've met Bigyin and actually thought he was an OK fella but all this childish bickering is getting right on my tits now, and won't bother replying to stupid PM's - I really have got much, much better things to do with my time. I'm going to the meet, and I'll enjoy it knowing that I've done my bit regarding inclusion of everyone, despite advice not to bother.

Can we grow up and become the adults that we all are again please?

Well OK - no, you didn't actually turn me down flat, you just completely ignored what I had said and just ranted on about not wanting to go actually, you didn't say anything about wanting to go in your own car. I've been on this forum a while now, I think most people on here know me well enough to know I'm not a bull*****er

I've still got all your PM's and could quote them all if you really want to go on about who said what, but I'm getting sick of all this childishness. Like I said, we're all grown ups now, let's start acting our age eh?

You don't want to go to the meet, we all know this and the reasons why, so let's just leave it now, yes?

Just read all this....please get it back on track without bitchiness :y

From experience, the only location advice is : ensure cafe and toilets close by.
Touristy stuff unimportant, unless planning a group trip round somewhere..

You all just park up in a location somewhere and have a natter.

Organisation : you all have a common goal, meet up and have a yack.

Polls work very well for meets, group decision on venue and dates (see chester meet thread for this in practise.)

Thanks all.
