Omega General Help / Re: Headlights
« on: 06 December 2007, 22:25:21 »
That would be really helpful if you could do a guide - I am sure many OOF members would appreciate this!! :y

I was having a good look at them last night.  The 'spheres' on the dipped beam appear 'cloudy', so was wondering if they are supposed to be that way or do they need cleaning.  If so, what is the best way?? :-?

Curiously, beam pattern must be okay as my Omega passed it's MOT on Monday with flying colours!!!!

Is it me or are Omega headlights really poor??? :-?

I drove SWMBO's Y reg Polo the other night and this just highlighted how bad my Omega headlights are - I actually think they are quite dangerous especially when oncoming traffic is coming it is really difficult to make out your side of the road.  My previous Carlton headlights were bad, but these seem much worse!! >:(

Any suggestions??

My Omega is 2002 CD Saloon non-Xenons.

Omega General Help / Re: Fuel Consumption
« on: 14 November 2007, 20:08:15 »
Update on fuel consumption on my 2.2 auto (filled up today) - this has been the WORST consumption so far for my usual weekly running:

MID reading:  Ave. Speed: 26mph  Miles covered:  270.1  Miles left:  76  Ave. Cons 23.4mpg!!!  >:( >:(

Bought plugs, air filter oil and filter to change this week.  If anyone can PLEASE help me to sort this out to achieve 'normal' fuel consumption this would be much appreciated!!!

Thanx

Oil and filter was changed with vx fully synth at last service in March (11k ago).
That is far too long. The specified oil changes are to please fleet managers, not look after the engine.  Nobody makes an automotive oil that lasts beyond about 7k, hence I normally recommend <5k oil changes.

Not that changing the oil will improve performance immediately, but a kind service schedule will slowly bring some performance back.

Will change the oil again this week - is it worth the extra for fully synthetic??  Probably worth another service for what the parts will cost whilst I'm at it!  The last service was two years previous (before I owned it) but only covered 5k between then and when I first owned it, so 'missed' at least an annual service, so you could say the car had been a little bit neglected!

That's bloody good...

I get 18mpg on my commute, all A roads and dual carraige way!

 :o :o :o 18  :o :o

Ragging the nuts off my 2.2 constantly i can never get it below 28..... and i do try hard!   ;D ;)

But you have two cylinders missing ;D

Having driven 2.5 manuls and 3.0 autos... those extra 2 pots do sod all for any real performance difference ....

My 2.2 auto is SLOW AND only averages 24-25mpg on a mix of A roads and city driving!!  Never ever had any better than 30mpg and has only 37k on the clock!!!  Something must be wrong with mine, surely??? :'( :'(

does seam low, my dad averages 31/32 in his 2.2 auto...

Had a tech2 read the codes?

Marks DTM read the codes last week with Tech2 when he did the autobox upgrade (and climate and cruise enabled!) and returned no errors.  All other readings which Mark checked appeared normal.

Cleaned TB and breathers during the summer - breathers were clear but TB was kacked up.  Oil and filter was changed with vx fully synth at last service in March (11k ago).  Also this service changed plugs, air and fuel filter.

Any other ideas??  Could plug gaps need adjusting??  When I accelerate hard, does feel as though it is holding back.  Progress through the 'power band' is not smooth either, feels like there is a 'flat spot' present.

Any help would be much appreciated!!! :y

I found the bypartsby.co.uk wishbones better than VSC. Slightly better quality visually and they've lasted a lot longer.

I've had a look at these, and they are only £14.46 each + VAT!!  Seems very cheap?? :) :)

Genuines are way too expensive now...

Why is this??  Usually as cars get older, generally prices for parts tend to fall, don't they?

I have exactly the same problem, and I can not locate it. BTW how is your oil consumption as in case of mine this is the only problem, and now all service guys say that the power loss is because of the oil is burning, though the car does not smoke. I did not have error code as well and I already changed quite a number of bits and pieces costing me a fortune. Please let me know if you find the cause.

Thanks
mbraz

I must say that the engine does not use ANY oil.  Had the oil changed last March when last serviced (at 26k now done 35k) and has not used a drop during this time.

First port of call is TECH2 check and take it from there.  Will keep you posted! :y

Bad starting when warm (engine that is ) and possible rev limiting to about 4500rpm

Hmm...okay.  I'll tell you my problem.  I have noticed recently that sometimes when accelerating quite quickly to 60 or 70mph, the car sometimes feels as though it is holding back slightly through the revs, and then the power comes back (like a 'surging' sensation).

I also had a strange experience when coming back from Skeg one night recently on the A158, driving at approx 55mph, the engine 'lost' all power for approx. 2 seconds, and then came back (with a slight jolt).  Expected EML to light but nothing.  Never happened since.....

Mine went with the exactly same problem. Had the codes read by local VX and found it was a EGR problem. Have blanked off this with a home made plate, but made too good a job of it. Had to drill a small hole underneath the piston side of the plate. Car responds as it should.

Get the code read and see if it is your cam sensor or some other problem.

Had the EGR cleaned by an AA bloke I know after I had the exhaust manifold gasket was done as it was idling badly the day after (no EML light though).  He cleaned it with WD40 and made sure the piston was nice and free before re-fitting.  Not (knowingly) had a problem since.

That 'odd' two second episode on the A158 has not happened since but was a bit alarming as it 'felt' as though the engine cut-out (but obviously didn't).

I am not going to mess - I will get it TECH2'd by Marks DTM as he is only

Out of interest, what is the general average 'shelf-life' of such components as cam and crank sensors?  Never had a problem with this sort of thing on previous motors.

Possible failing crankshaft sensor.......but as you know it really needs to be code read first before thrwing lots of money at guess work.
Any Auto electrican should be able to read the codes, or someone on here may have an aftermarket code reader that may do the trick.

I am planning to have a run down to Nottingham to see Marks DTM for an autobox upgrade in the near future, perhaps he could have a look with his TECH2.  I hear that he is a top bloke!! :y

Thanx

Omega General Help / Symptoms of a failing cam sensor? 2.2i petrol

Can anyone tell me what the classic early symptoms are of a failing cam sensor on a 2.2i petrol?

Thanx in advance!

Omega General Help / Re: 4 cyl 2.2 nsy exhaust on start up ???
« on: 21 September 2007, 20:11:39 »
Hi Joe and Welcome to the forum! :y

99% sure it is the exhaust manifold gasket - it is a common problem with the 2.2i petrol I'm afraid :(

If you are unlucky the exhaust manifold could also be cracked - again quite a common problem :( (New manifolds are around £120 from Vx)

Happened on mine with only low mileage (26k) gasket blown but fortunately manifold was okay (phew!)

Be prepared though when you remove the manifold from the engine block that at LEAST one stud will shear and will have to be drilled out (usually the stud right at the front near No. 1 cylinder) which is awkward to drill out.

Sorry that all this sounds a bit negative but just want you to be aware!!
