Latest update in the saga. Got the new regulator, changed it over, refitted alternator and battery (correctly). Car started and seemed to be running good, went to get the multimeter to check output at the battery, boom, stinking smell and smoke pouring out from the alternator again. New alternator required? or scrap everything and start again?

Thanks for the replies, very much appreciated. Battery is charging at the moment so I'll get it all checked soon. Have contacted the manufacturer of the alternator with regards to a new regulator. Fingers crossed!

I'm not sure how bad it is but I drove it round the block after doing the damage, car felt underpowered but the fan is working the windows are working also the heated seats etc. I am sincerely hoping it may just be a new regulator on the alternator and possibly a new battery. If not it may unfortunately be getting dismantled for parts to try and recoup some of the money I have spent on it.

Having purchased a new alternator for my 3.2 I got round to fitting it today. I have been charging the battery all week ready to go in. All work done, looking good, connect the negative battery terminal and major sparks and then smoke from the area of the alternator! I've only gone and connected the battery in reverse polarity!

Quickly disconnected and turned battery round the right way. Car starts and runs, when I removed the key the battery light stayed on, started again then all sorts of lights on the dash, Speedo and rev counter going to zero then jumping up to a figure then back down to zero. Car now won't start. Battery has been removed.

Have I killed my car? I'm absolutely gutted!

Omega General Help / Re: Steering idler question?
« on: 30 August 2016, 20:59:04 »
Hi Andy, I followed the guide on here regarding alignment and camber. Used a spirit level with an 8.5mm spacer at 450mm to check the camber and it was spot on at 1 degree. Done the toe in by eye and the car seems to be running great and the steering wheel is straight, car doesn't pull to either side and tracks straight.

Cheers TheBoy, the missus isn't going to like that, that's just shy of a fifth of what I paid for the car!

Omega General Help / Steering idler question?
« on: 30 August 2016, 19:20:23 »
Hope someone can enlighten me regards the idler. I have replaced the wishbones, steering arms and drop links but I am still getting a little wobble between 50-70mph with a slightly vague feel. I'm now looking to change the steering idler and have seen the posts regarding the cheap ones that are best avoided. I have found that you can purchase the lemforder idler arm insert, just the silver bush part. My question is has anyone done this before, i.e changed just the bush out of the arm? I believe it is the original arm that is on the car and it seems like a more affordable way to change for a good bushing in the idler.

Omega General Help / Re: Rear brakes?

The springs on the car are shot, 80 quid for two small bits of metal!!! I can get two callipers for 30 and a fitting kit for 7 quid. The other option I have read about is to replace the pins with split pins, it's the springs that are the problem!

Fair enough I'll look into the pins and springs from Vx, would you happen to know the part numbers by chance?

There is method in my madness! The callipers look quite worn, so my thinking is get a pair of callipers for solid discs, clean and refurbish them, then replace the callipers on the car. There is also much greater choice in the solid discs and fitting kits.

Thanks Nick, I've seen the discs and pads in various places. Good to know about the pins as that was the struggle. Would there be any merit in changing the callipers in order to fit solid discs?

I am needing to overhaul the rear brakes on my 3.2 saloon with the vented rear discs. Does anyone know of anywhere that sells all the parts? I'm needing discs, pads, pins and springs. While I have it apart is worth doing the shoes as well?

Had a root around this morning, spring is missing the lower pigtail so I'm thinking that might be the problem!
