Dad's megga just displayed the "Check Brake Pads" in the MID display, I was MOT'd very recently and the brakes feel good.
Last time this came up it was a sensor error, luckly at the time he was getting 4 new tyres @ a Vx dealer and it was sorted under the lease agreement.
But now he owns it, we want to check it ourselves. If the wheel is taken off how easy is it to check / clean the sensor?
Thanks
Btw he has a facelift too

There should be some wires attached to the pads - either buy new ones or short the two wires together
-
do you mean new pads or new sensors?
no way to clean the sensors? are they physically inside the pad?
-
The first thing to do is remove the wheels and check the the pads visually.
If they seem fine, then check the sensor wiring, carefully!
The sensors are delicate things and will often break when you remove the pads.
Replacements are around £20 a pair.
-
odd that ... when changing my front discs and pads recently, I noticed that there was only a connector for one sensor - the other wheels' wire had been cut off and sealed with heatshrink ... so I only needed the one sensor!
-
does that mean someone cut your other sensors off?
£20 a pair seams quite a bit just to keep the sensors & MID happy, if it contiues to come up i might do as Martin says and short the wires

Thats why I did this to the 2.0CD before selling

I've shorted mine out to get rid of the warning, after checking the pads were ok of course. I may reinstate them when I need the pads replacing!
-
generlly the sensors are a bit premature - remember my dad getting this on a renault 21 when frankly there was 1000`s of miles left. Hs result was to short em out.
However they should never be completly ignored!
The sensors will always break when you remove the pad.
-
thanks for this, inspection of the pads is needed! :)
-
I have some spare genuine pads - yours for TC price as always. I don't have any spare sensors (and they tend to break anyway when changing them, so always worth having a set) - but I can get some from Vx tomorrow....

Thanks for the offer Jamie, i think the pads are fine, brakes are as good as ever.
Due to my dads very low millage which is 90% motorway i think we are going to leave it for now.
He said it only came on once during the day (maybe hot weather)?
Thanks for the offer though, if the message persists may take you up on that.

The pad warning is a little early imho - usually about 1/3 pad left.
-
If it is intermittent, clean the connectors. It could also be the cable, but not much you can do about that.

If there is a 1/3 of the pad left thats about 2 years use with my dads current millage!
He leaves for birmingham airport on monday, and drives back on Friday so its only 100 miles a week.
I drive it myself fairly regually and the brakes on it are better than mine! :-[

Probably those muppets who used to maintain your motor before you got it have fitted some crappy pads/discs....
-
no doubt it has Vx Agila discs & pads! :-[

sensors are there for a reason guys !! when a pad gets that low you can get brake fade which is not a nice feeling !! :o i would change them as the pad warning comes up remember these cars are heavy 1.7 tons on average !! ;) ;)

I do agree with markey mark's view on the subject, but then I probably rely too much on my brakes some days [smiley=evil.gif]
