breakdown insurance rescuemycar.com
« on: 27 July 2015, 15:02:49 »

i see my breakdown cover premium is due to go up from £18.90 a year to £30.99 (plus £40 excess charge per call out - £53.90 a year without the excess).   still reasonable for national recovery but a steep enough increase for me to look around.

are there any better deals?  i'm not interested in roadside assistance i can do that, what i need is national recovery.  currently i use rescuemycar.com they have been very good to date.

i'd quite like a few days a year european cover but that seems hugely expensive - £115.

i recall a lot of policies have small print that means they may not recover nationally if they can instead dump it at an expensive local garage and just pay a night's hotel bill instead.

I've been with Green Flag for at least 10 yeas now, but I joined via the Caravan Club's "Mayday" service. The reason for that, apart from the discount offered, is that they cover me AND my caravan (tin tent, as it is known on here....) to my holiday destination and if it has not been repaired by the end of the holiday they recover me and my caravan back home, all as part of the same call-out.
As I pay by DD, I can't say offhand how much it costs me, but I'm not in a hurry to change. Recently I had two separate call-outs close together due to firstly a dead starter motor and the second one due to a dead alternator, so the wick in the engine went out!

Seeing as rescuemycar only charge a small amount for holiday type euro cover, I'd take that out separately when you need it TBH, unless you travel frequently (more than 3 or 4 times) to euroland.

Also, be aware that all our cars are at least 12yrs old now. That may invalidate some "driver" policies

Or even some "car" policies, even though they let you take it out!

Think I was only paying 50 quid with the AA for any car I was in, had to hammer a deal with them every year though, not used them for about 9 years now so I decided to scrap it this year when it was up in April.

Also worth mentioning some you can join now 2 mins before you have a breakdown for around 35 notes.

AA seemed unwilling to drop below online price this year, so I too cancelled.

I don't pay any breakdown, I used to for the 2 of us, but never used them so stopped, saved a few hundred pounds over the last few years.

The Honda has cover anyway, renewed, by Honda, each time I use Main dealer for Service..... :y

The Mig, if it breaks down, I pay, cost me £60 for a Sunday Tea Time recovery to home, so I can live with that.......... :y :y
