Battery Reading

What do knowledgeable people make of these battery readings:-

Battery Voltage - 40% - 12.1v

Battery Starter Power - 10.1v

Alternator Output -  14.9v

Battery Capacity - 97% - 783amp

I would say fully charge it . If you’ve 97% of the amp hour capacity there can’t be anything wrong with it and the alternator is charging ok although maybe a bit on the high side.

Are you using a good known multimeter? Some of the cheaper ones can be a bit inaccurate too and if it were say 14.6/7  that would be ok IMO.

Don't think I've ever had to take a battery reading, not in my car anyway. The ones in my hearing aid play up sometimes, and the wife goes through them like I don't know what in her thingy.

Didn't you have similar issues with the Merc when you first got it?

Marks explanation at the time probably applies equally to the Astra being as newfangled...

Summat about alternator output varying with demand vs voltage iirc ;)

Yep, lin connected alternator giving a power managed charge approach, it will raise the output only when the battery capacity is low (its more advanced than just a volts reading) and lower it when ever possible, raising it again under braking etc.

The battery management will try to keep the state of charge between 70-90% typically, so in your case its lower than that and the alternator will be charging as fast as it can to get it back to the safe operating area, hence the 14.9V.

Internal resistance looks ok to as its not dropping below 10V under cold crank

The readings were taken with a Ring RSC608 8a SmartCharge with Battery Analyser.

The battery analyser part is excellent.
