The tools are bought, youtube videos bookmarked and MIG welder being re searched.

Could anyone send me a picture of what the front wheel arches should look like on a 2002 Omega so I know what part should and should not be there. Was this just metal with a coating or were they metal with a lining then coating? I am coming across a lot of steel but also a softer peeling material.. which I hope was not metal :(

I am also wondering as a newbie to mechanics if someone could point me in the right direction to understand what the wires and tubes are in this area.

The softer peeling material is underseal. It was very patchily applied to Omega inner wings and front chassis rails, as was the paint.

I don't want to be patronising, but if you haven't done any welding and need to ask about the wiring and plumbing on and around the chassis rails, you should start on much simpler jobs. You can do a lot of damage without trying hard.

That plumbing is brake pipes on both sides, trans and engine cooling above the drivers rails, and A/C pipes above the passenger side.

And the fuel lines on the right hand chassis rail.

Half the cooling fan and aircon wiring runs on top of the left chassis rail, but isn't visible from the wheel arch or with the engine in place.

Cheers folks, The welding is for the sills and back arches. Just cleaning up the front arches so I can see what looks good, bad and ugly.

So far with a lot of cleaning up I have only found one rust hole that appeared just above a rectangle hole.

That will involve stripping both sides to clear before anyone can even think about welding  :-\
