Car wont turn over
« on: 13 August 2023, 20:14:20 »

So after running fine, I went to start the car and all I got is a relay click from the engine bay.
If it turned over slowly or starter clicked Id have an idea, but its just dead.

Battery is good.

Where do I start guys?

Tap starter motor with a wooden mallet whilst somebody tries to crank, and see if it then spins....

If so, replace starter.

Take the key out, and reinsert it. Then turn it one position at a time , pause at 11 and then try cranking.

Other items:

Starter as above or inhibitor switch. Does it crank in neutral for example.

Have you dropped the key since the car was last started? The immobiliser chip is easily lost...

No, not dropped keys. The chip in still in there, but then i guess it would spin over and not fire in that case scenario.
I wondered about the inhibitor switch, as the starter is doing nothing, wont even crank the engine slowly.
I shall try the wooden mallet as soon as I can.

Thinking about it, I had a starter put in about four years ago.

the starter has 2 wires to it, see if you can get a wire down to the smaller one. touching this to the battery positive will confirm if the starter is ok.
if it is then you need to find why its not getting 12v from ignition switch. usual suspect would be the gear lever inhibit but unusual to fail in neutral and park too !

I get this sometimes on mine, I've sometimes got to "shoogle" the selector when in "N" and it then turns over.
