Trouble ahead. No electricity?

This is truly worrying, but no-one seems to know about it. >:( >:(

Ah, is that why I keep getting the repeated messages ‘Urgent, your electricity meter certification has expired. DO NOT ignore this message and book an appointment for a smart meter now’.
I’ve ignored it again so I guess they’ll cut me off.  :-\  Out of devilment I did try to book an appointment in the year 2030 but their booking system only allows me to go as far as November 2024.  ::)
We’ve had 3 very short power cuts (UKPowerNet) in the last month so perhaps they’ve started already.  :)

Interestingly, I received this SMS text on 23 September:

Hello, this is UK Power Networks. We own and maintain the cables which deliver electricity to your premises. We believe someone in your household is eligible for free priority support in the event of a power cut. We want to make sure you don't miss out on this support and will shortly be including your household on our Priority Services Register. You can opt out by texting UKPN OPT OUT to 60650, messages you send are free. You can also find out more here https://www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/extra-support

Presumably, it's because I'm over 65, but this is the first time I've ever received such a message and is a clear indication that power cuts are in the cards. :o

Having watched the first few minutes, my main takeaway is that clearly the person presenting the video does not know the meaning of the word rationing  ::).

Spooked by a message over 65's get every year. I'm starting to think, seriously, that you need to talk to someone.

Octopus are not so rude to me, theirs is more of a "please, call us".
Think I've been getting them every three months or so for about three years now. But, despite my meter certification having expired, they keep signing me up for another twelve months.

It's obvious that as they replace reliable electricity generation with unreliable generation there will be brownouts, unplanned power cuts and planned rolling blackouts.  ::)

25 years ago I stayed with a friend in Kampala, Uganda where his district had no electricity between 6pm and 10pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which obviously were pub nights!  :)

His place had a view over Kampala and it was bizarre seeing whole areas go dark at 6pm and then seeing all the lights come on at 10pm.  :o

If someone had told me then that such third world conditions would have been coming to the UK, I would have laughed dismissively.  :-X

Not experienced them personally, but apparently rolling shut offside are apparently a thing in California.

I wonder whether not being connected to the national grid is a viable notion or if it's actually legal to build a house without electricity* :-\

That's thinking out loud, as in can a house without electricity actually be classed as a dwelling.

The sound of generators thrumming away could become a common night time sound.  :-\

That's assuming we are allowed to buy petrol/diesel to run them on that is!  :-X

What she is trying to say, in her own stupid way, is that electricity is so expensive that people are forced to cut back i.e. self ration. There's plenty of the stuff to go around, so no blackouts.
Fillet steak is also being rationed, have you seen the fickin price of it?  :o
