General Discussion Area / Rick has left the building
« on: 13 June 2011, 15:48:43 »
Daz arrived here in Kent bright and early this morning for his second visit to me to replace my cambelt/tensioners some 20 months since his last visit.

Total legend...always meticulous and his attention to detail is quite remarkable ,leaving some so called mechanics efforts well in the shade.

In several hours he had replaced the kit/fitted new water pump and coolant/cleaned the breathers for me and now the car runs like new.He was then off to another forum members car up the way to do the same,so all in all a good days work,Daz.

Top man and he comes highly recommended from this corner of Kent.

See you in another 20 months.

Mind the "Fire Water in the Costa Del Peckham" tonight.!!

General Discussion Area / Bit of Computer advise required
« on: 04 April 2011, 17:17:04 »
I have a Dell Inspirion 1720  laptop which I use for work with a computer design system from company called Articad.

The  tight firm I do sub work for told us that we needed to buy a laptop as all there sales designs for bedrooms/kitchens would only be accepetd in computer format.

For the last year I have stuggled along with the sytem ,only using it when absolutley necessary,as I am not very computer literate and it was the only way I could get them to pass me work. They have now upgraded the software they use and my laptop doesn,t have enough space to download the new operating upgrade.

Up till now it has been in drive C which had a total storgae of about 30gb but now tells me it only has 160mb free.Computer has 160gb of storage but Dell seem to have some strange system of splitting it across various drives.C/D/E/F..all of which have almost non used.

From talking to a technical guy at our main office he says Dell cannot shift  storage across drives and I will need to upgrade ....can I just fit a second extra hard drive as reading Dells site it seems to make it look like you just plug another in?

I would be gratefull for some advise from any body with a bit of computer info that could advise best action to take.

General Discussion Area / Any plumbers/Electricians that can help ?
« on: 13 November 2008, 20:58:01 »
Due to ongoing issue with our central heating system it has become necessary to resite the room thermostat from the landing due to a new radiator being sited close by.The existing system is a coventional baxi boiler and expansion tank..the temperature being controled by a room thermostat.I intend to replace the stat with a wireless unit Drayton RFS 1 ,but I am confused by the wiring on the backplate.
The existing dial unit has 3 wires...Blue-N   Brown-L  pin 3-Yellow/Green
The new unit has 5 connections...N  L   (1)-common   (2)-Heating satisfied or call for cooling  (3)- call for heating. The wiring detail supplied with the unit shows a switch between pin 1 and 2 and states volt free contacts.
My question is ..to what number pin  1/2/3 do I connect the yellow/green wire or do I need some extra wires ...sure it can,t be too difficult for someone in the know.

General Discussion Area / 3.0 ltr cam upgrades
« on: 04 June 2008, 10:13:16 »
Spent most of yesterday removing cam covers /cam belt/tensioners and now the removal of the standard 2.5 cam shafts.
Weather permitting I am going to put the car back together today with my recently bought 3.0 cam shafts and am quite excited about the improvement in performance.I have seen that sveral members have done this upgrade and was wondering on how much better I can expect the performance to be or will it not be noticeable .The new camshafts will be still be fitted but just curious on others opinions .

General Discussion Area / Quite Chuffed
« on: 23 December 2007, 14:04:08 »
Just wanted to thank you guys for advise and knowledge over the last few months since I have enjoyed this forum.I am proud to say that I have just finished replacing my long over due radiator on my mega.
Took me all morning in between several coffee breaks so in total must have saved me 3+ hours labour. All works well, fitted new expansion bottle and cap, done a full flush of coolant and filled and added 5 litres  "red "vx antifreeze, and must say for a novice I am quite chuffed with my efforts.Fitted new seals on power steering banjo pipes and also on both thermo switches so baring major problems car should now hold it fluid !!!
Hope everyone who reads this has a great Christmas and best wishes to you and yours for the New Year.
Andrew
