Did not want to hijack 'dead radio' thread......
CR2006 unit in 2.6ltr Elite Estate.
Basically....switched ign on....only top line and bottom line of display showing, and changing when stalk clicked, radio and CD not working. Switched off...and display remains.   As per dbugs reply to other thread I tried fuse 12 as well as fuse 20. Both were ok. One difference, however, was after checking 20 and replacing, there was no difference to display or radio/cd. After removing and replacing 12, the cd unit started clicking, and Safe mode is now displaying, which I assume means code input required. Also the display now goes out after removing the key.

Repairing is ok...assuming code input is all that is now required....but, what could have caused it. Why did the display remain on and dim after removing the key. I noticed that it came brighter when I started the engine and revved it. Could this be a short....I don't want a fire Due to the 'Safe' display, I know the display unit is working ok and is nice and bright. Or could it be just a poor connection, or damp. Worked perfectly till this morning.
Sorry if a bit long winded, but I am a believer in finding the cause, and not just trying to rectify

I`d start by looking at Battery voltage and condition - don`t assume that just because your car starts that all is well.

Cold weather can knock hell out of a battery and the symptoms you describe are fairly classic of low voltage.

Just been out and metered battery...showing a tad over 12 volts on my meter. Both terminals clean and well connected, just protective on them. No acid leaks, etc, etc.   Also little green light is fully visable

You need to test the battery under load - as even a knackered battery will give the readings you describe and I have NEVER seen that LED go out !!

Should be something on here in the maintenance section of how to check a battery properly.

It may not be your fault, but what you describe points to that being the culprit.

Could just be a poor connection on fuse #12 - removing and replacing enough to "clean" contacts.

I have recoded the radio and all is now well......just have to put it down as 'one of those things'

It's not really a light or L.E.D.
I've often seen the window black, never red though....

Some manufacturers include a built-in hydrometer to show the state of charge of the battery, a transparent tube with a float immersed in the electrolyte visible through a window. When the battery is charged, the specific gravity of the electrolyte increases (since all the sulfate ions are in the electrolyte, not combined with the plates), and the colored top of the float is visible in the window. When the battery is discharged, or the electrolyte level is too low, the float sinks and the window appears yellow (or black). The built-in hydrometer only checks the state of charge of one cell and will not show faults in the other cells. In a non-sealed battery each of the cells can be checked with a portable or hand-held hydrometer.

Mine does this occasionally. Pulling the fuse, as you have done, resets it. I think it's just a quirk of the 2006, personally.
