The Gumpathon / March for Honour
« on: 04 November 2010, 12:23:39 »

Hi guys

Just to let you all know (if you didn't already), that there are two fairly hefty physical challenges underway at the moment, by serving & former members of the British Armed Services.
The first is the Gumpathon, so called, because it was inspired by the Forest Gump character's trek across America. In short, it is 6 men, 8 weeks, 3520 miles across America. This includes Royal Marine Mark Ormrod, who lost both legs, & his right arm in Afghanistan, and other service personnel. The money raised will go to Help for Heroes, & (as they have an American Marine - Charles Padilla) the US injured Semper Fi fund, & the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund. This will be completed on 11th November 2010. for more info please see http://www.thegumpathon.com/index.php
The next one, is UK based, & is called the March for Honour. This commenced today at 1000hrs at Plymouth Hoe, & will be completed on 11th November, at the Royal Albert Hall, London. There will be teams from the Royal Marines, Royal Navy, Army & the RAF taking part.
Each team will wear military uniform, & will complete an average of 30 miles per day, and a total distance of approximately 250 miles. This first four legs will take place between today & Monday (8th Nov), with all 4 teams joining at Wootton Bassett to begin the last leg, which will finish at the Royal Albert Hall on Thrursday 11th November.
Again, for more info, please see http://www.marchforhonour.com/
As a serving Bootneck (Royal Marine), it would be great if you guys just even looked at these, if you want to contribute, that's even better. No matter how you feel about why we were in Iraq/are in Afghanistan, the guys & girls are just doing their job, & don't ask for anything in return.

A splendid post One Zero.

I'm always humbled by the sheer determination of those who organise and participate in these events (especially those who have suffered injury).

It's an outstanding demonstration of teamwork, strength of spirit and selflessness by all involved.

I wish them well.
