Omega General Help / wiper home position
« on: 19 August 2006, 23:49:23 »
Hi folks,

I was using my windscreen wipers tonight - they've been working fine since I swapped out the motor a couple of months ago. However for some reason the wipers have decided their "home" position is now at the top of the sweep instead of the bottom. If you turn the wipers on, they go down to the bottom - then back up to the top again (???)

Any ideas on how to fix this, I'm guessing turn the wipers on, quickly turn off ignition when they are at the bottom of the screen, then disconnect the battery - leave for a few minutes - then reconnect.

Is this right, how long should I leave the battery off for?

Omega General Help / rear blind disassembly
« on: 16 July 2006, 22:27:54 »
well I finally decided to look into the non-functioning blind in my new omega, followed memory and the guide on here - I think it had just seized through lack of use. The problem in this scenario is that it would appear the control unit applies voltage to the motor until it encounters resistance, then stops. Therefore mine wouldn't move at all!

I found that when I removed the motor from the gearbox, the motor worked fine - but I could hear a spring uncoiling when I removed the motor :'(

If you want to strip the gearbox to check its' internals, there is a T20 screw on the opposite end to the motor - undo this and the spring tension will be released, you can then safely remove the cover.

Upon re-assembly, offer the motor up to the linkage and mark where the flat of the gearbox spindle is. Then use a pair of mole grips to turn the spindle one turn clockwise to roughly the same postion, hold in place and refit the motor - the worm drive of the motor will then hold the spindle in place, you can then refit the screws. The spring tension then helps to lift the blind, it struggles big time otherwise!

If you can't screw the motor and gearbox assembly back into its' original place, use one screw and operate the blind - then quickly remove the plug whilst the blind is moving. You can then rotate the motor/gearbox assembly and fit the other screws - otherwise, the blind will not stop moving until it hits an obstruction and you won't be able to get the screws in place!

Hope this helps someone, it was a bit of a pig to do as there is quite a lot of work to get to the blind, but am glad it's sorted now!  :)

Omega Gallery / facelift elite
« on: 28 September 2006, 01:03:22 »
well after promising pics of this a while ago, here's one of my "new" elite .... have had it since May, but it wasn't in regular use for a month or so when I first got it due to its' troubles!

Have fitted a much-needed irmscher grille to the front, nothing else so far ...  ::)

I'll update this with some more (and hopefully better) pics soon ....

General Discussion Area / steering idler change
« on: 20 April 2008, 19:59:50 »
Hi everyone,

had a go at changing the steering idler on a friend's omega today, the end attached to the centre tie rod was a bit "challenging" ... until I had what I thought was a bright idea - and it worked  :y

Remove nut securing idler to centre tie rod
Remove nearside track rod completely
turn steering fully to the right, this exposes the end of the centre tie rod
tap end of centre tie rod with 1lb dead-blow hammer

this seperated the two for me with 3 or 4 fairly easy blows ... way, way easier than mucking about with breaker bars!!

any comments on this - if it's perceived to be a good solution then the how-2 could be updated ... ????

General Discussion Area / mobile mains power ...
« on: 19 May 2007, 15:02:46 »
just thought I'd mention, Maplin are currently selling on special offer a 12VDC to 240VAC inverter - rated at 150W continuous, 450W peak.

It's a modified sine wave output so probably not brilliant for audio gear, but for charging a laptop or something on those lines I'd have thought it'd be ideal. It's got overload & short circuit protection, plus 12V input low voltage alarm (11V) & cut-off (at 10V)

link is here

price at £14.99 while stocks last, thought it was worth getting if I need to use the laptop whilst working on the car at the garage (no mains power source there) ... it's cheaper than a "proper" 12V laptop power supply, plus if you want to run something else (eg an inspection lamp) you can do that too ... BARGAIN  ;D

I've fitted my total closure kit (at last) ... a how-2 is here

someone recently asked for a how-2 on this ... and I can confirm it's definitely harder to do than on a saloon!!
the guide can be found here ...

General Discussion Area / 3.2 engines?
« on: 03 February 2007, 16:49:00 »
I've been looking at a replacement miggy estate for mine - have spoken to a trader selling a 'Y' reg 3.2 estate, he said the engine isn't a Vauxhall 3.2 but an Isuzu one ... has anyone heard of this? Sounds a bit odd to me, although I know Isuzu made some of the diesel lumps used in other Vx cars ...

General Discussion Area / hmmmm ....
« on: 24 January 2007, 22:48:48 »
... do I smell a rat?

manual estate listed here on autotrader - only it says (and vehicle license website confirms) that it's a 2.5V6. The single exhaust would appear to confirm this. But the engine bay shows the extended plenum - AFAIK only fitted to the 3.0 and 2.6/3.2's (the latter two of which can be ruled out as it's got an accelerator cable and EGR), plus the tailgate says 3.0V6 ... ???

A family member has my old miggy ... it had some work done on it by a local garage (DIS pack replacement) and they obviously didn't know miggy's well ... eg, the large part of the scuttle was ripped off (funnily enough the passenger side was intact so I guess they worked out how to remove it properly quickly!!), pipes not routed correctly (stretched over the rear multiram electrical connector instead of over, etc).

The rear shocks are definitely shot - and as it's an elite it will need the self-levelling ones ... it's also chewing the outer edges of the front tyres, the same garage reckon it needs both wishbones and centre diff seal replacing too.

Any recommendations on Vx specialists or garages / mobile mechanics that know what they're doing on miggy's in the west cornwall (Penzance) area and don't charge the earth? I'm guessing it may also need alignment too once the wishbones have been changed, again any recommended places mroe local other than WIM ??

thanks

I know this has been discussed before ... but out of these four types, what would folks recommend?

Avon ZZ3 @ £104 each
Continental Conti-contact @ £134 each
Pirelli P-Zero Rosso @ £95 each
Michelin (can't remeber the type) @ £145 each

cheers :)

General Discussion Area / clutch weight?
« on: 21 October 2006, 17:36:08 »
just a quick question ... I had an accident about 5 years ago which damaged a disc in my spine, as a result I've more or less resigned myself to driving auto's as the clutch on some cars is pretty heavy - especially in traffic - this gives me pain in my right leg.

The toyota avensis (y-reg) I had in my old job had a pretty heavy clutch - noticeable in traffic.

However someone at work recently mentioned about their renault scenic clutch being hydraulically assisted and very light - I seem to remember that the miggy one is assisted too.

So ... how heavy is the clutch on a manual miggy?

Also - why is it on the 3.2's it's only the ex-plod ones that are available as manual, what's the reason why?

General Discussion Area / yorkshire dales
« on: 02 October 2006, 01:08:37 »
Hi folks,

I'm planning to give the barge a stretch of its' legs (and mine too) with a run up to and around the yorkshire dales later this week - planning to be there for a week or so.

Any recommendations on where to go whilst up there - never visited before - heard it's nice up there though  ;)
