Not Scared

An old man and woman were married for many years, even though they hated each other.

When they had a confrontation, screaming and yelling could be heard deep into the night. The old man would shout, “When I die, I will dig my way up and out of the grave and come back and haunt you for the rest of your life!”

Neighbors feared him; they believed he practiced black magic because of many strange occurrences that took place in their neighborhood. The old man liked the fact that he was feared.

To everyone’s relief, he died of a heart attack when he was 68. His wife had a closed casket at the wake. After the burial, she began to party as if there were no tomorrow.

Her neighbors, concerned for her safety, asked “Aren’t you afraid that he may indeed be able to dig his way up and out of the grave and come back to haunt you for the rest of your life?”

The wife put down her drink and said, “Let him dig. I had him buried upside down.”

Bob’s Last Letter

Dear Friends: It is important for men to remember that as women grow older it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as they did when they were younger. When men notice this, they should try not to yell.

Let me relate how I handle the situation.

When I got laid off from my consulting job and took “early retirement” in April, it became necessary for Nancy to get a full-time job, both for extra income and for health benefits that we need. It was shortly after she started working that I noticed that she was beginning to show her age.

I usually get home from fishing or hunting about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says that she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts supper. I try not to yell, instead I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she finally does get supper on the table. She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. It is now not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after supper.

I do what I can by reminding her several times each evening that they aren’t cleaning themselves. I know she appreciates this, as it does seem to help her get them done before she goes to bed.

Now that she is older she seems to get tired so much more quickly. Our washer and dryer are in the basement. Sometimes she says she just can’t make another trip down those steps. I don’t make a big issue of this. As long as she finishes up the laundry the next evening I am willing to overlook it.

Not only that, but unless I need something ironed to wear to the Monday lodge meeting or to Wednesday’s or Saturday’s poker club or to Tuesday’s or Thursday’s bowling or something like that, I will tell her to wait until the next evening to do the ironing. This gives her little more time to do some of those odds and ends things like shampooing the dog, vacuuming or dusting.

Also, if I have had a really good day fishing, this allows her to gut and scale the fish at a more leisurely pace.

Nancy is starting to complain a little occasionally. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. In spite of her complaining, I continue to try to offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two or even three days. That way she won’t have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn’t hurt her any, if you know what I mean.

When doing simple jobs she seems to think she needs more rest periods.

She had to take a break when she was only half finished mowing the yard. I try not to embarrass her when she needs these little extra rest breaks. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. I tell her that as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me and take her break by the hammock so she can talk with me until I fall asleep.

I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Nancy on a daily basis. I’m not saying that the ability to show this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible. No one knows better than I do how frustrating women can become as they get older. However, guys, even if you just yell at your wife a little less often because of this article, I will consider that writing it was worthwhile.

Signed, Bob

Bob’s funeral was on Saturday, January 25th.

Nancy was acquitted Monday, January 27th.

General Discussion Area / Loophole! RAC cover for £11
« on: 24 May 2008, 07:10:35 »
What's the deal?

RAC's basic membership costs £33 for a year online, but currently it's possible to get a one-off £22 cashback via special sites, making the total price £11. Alternatively if you're a Tesco shopper and have Clubcard deals, you can pay with those to get it from £14.

Full details of both below and to see how it compares with non-loophole routes read the Cheap Breakdown Cover guide.

The Cashback Sites Route
Pay £33 and get £22 cashback = £11 for the year

What are they?

Cashback sites are simply special sites that list product providers and retailers, and when you click through them, they get paid for ‘providing leads’. Yet if you're a member (which is free) they give you some or all of what you earn it back.

What's the deal with the RAC?

Right now, sign up to the breakdown cover via a cashback site and you can get up to £22 cashback for doing it. You could also opt for higher cover, and get the same (or increased cashback at higher levels); though then it's a lower effective discount. Last time there was an equivalent deal, it was pulled quickly so do ensure you go fast.

The following are the top paying cashback sites
Topcashback: Pays £22 to all Link: Topcashback
Cashback Kings: Pays £22 but if you're new it takes the first £5 you earn each year (though if you switch to it from a different cashback site it'll waive your fee (read the details). Link: Cashback Kings
Quidco: Pays £21 but if you're new it takes the first £5 you earn each year. Link: Quidco
Wepromiseto: Pays £21 but if you're new it takes the first £5 you earn each year. Link: Wepromiseto

Warning! The cashback isn't 100% guaranteed

While there shouldn't be a problem with these deals; the payout on cashback sites is never guaranteed, as if there's a dispute with the retailer and the cashback site doesn't get paid - nor do you.

My suspicion is while this deal lasts, most people should get the payout. The cashback deal a day or two ago was higher, in fact some people were being paid to get policies. Yet at least one cashback site has informed the RAC it's doing this (which led to the cashback dropping) so as it's aware, that means it's far less likely to renege later.

If you're new to cashback sites, it's important you read all the pros, cons and warnings in the Top Cashback Sites article before doing this.

The Tesco ClubCard Vouchers Route
Pay with Clubcard points and get it 1/4 high st. price

For those that shop at Tesco's, instead of spending them instore you can swap them for Clubcard Deals vouchers which are worth four times the face value.

One of the deals available is RAC cover; the basic cover will cost you £14 in clubcard vouchers (a quarter of the non-online price) and you can get higher end policies at a quarter of the price. For more info read the article Breakdown Cover: Get RAC cover at 1/4 of the price

What does the cover include?

This is for RACs most basic cover which gives you roadside assistance anywhere in the UK 24 hours a day providing you are a quarter of a mile away from home. It doesn't offer home start cover. If your car can't be fixed by the roadside you'll be towed to a garage within 10 miles.

Want more than the basic cover? It's still possible for around £36

This is a quick tip based on the cashback loophole, yet it's not that much more expensive to get cover including home start and onward travel; without any loophole. Full details are in the Breakdown Cover: Get the cheapest article

Thanks to those already discussing it on the forums, we started a new thread for the email so we could give MoneySavers the full low down.

Signing up for call1899/18866/18185

Sometimes users receive an email saying that capacity is currently full and to try again in six weeks when signing up for 1899, 18866 and 18185.

Should this happen, sign up again using a mobile number and once you get the email saying you are registered go back into your profile and add your landline number and all should be well.

This tip was discovered on MSE a year ago but sadly the posts that pointed out this were lost during a crash on the old forums. I would like to credit the person who discovered it but have not been able to find these old posts

As pointed out by Martin in the updated article here 1899 are now slightly cheaper than 18866 since 18866 upped the connection charge to 5p however if dialling international calls it is always wise to use the International Call Checker here.

***As from 23/10/06 the connection charge for 1899 will be 4p***

18185 is good if you find you have to dial 0845 and 0870 numbers and are unable to find an alternative number by using saynoto0870

The charges for 18185 for 0845 are 3p per minute weekdays and 1p per minute at the w/ends with a 4p connection charge. 0870 are 4p per minute weekdays and 2p per minute at the w/ends again with 4p connection charge.

Charges for dialing mobiles via 18185 are 5p per minute weekdays and 2p per minute w/ends, again with a 4p connection charge.

***The above charges are for users with a BT line, for cable users please check the websites for the company concerned as the rates are different ***
