does this seem too cheap ???
« on: 29 November 2006, 17:30:56 »

Hi all, just got a quote from a garage to replace crank sensor, replace thermostat- parts and labour- £149 +/- £10 on my v6 2.5. does it seem a little on the low side especially if the sensor is £70 and the stat £40 that means they are only charging about £50 labour max. any views on it?

Could be a very honest garage, they wont pay those prices for the bits, so probably about £80-£90 labour, and they'll put VAT on that, so probably nearer £180...its not far off

Having done one, if I had a ramp I could do it in 30 mins or less without breaking a sweat.

THATS what cheeses me off, if i had a decent garage/workshop i would try to do most jobs but having just got on the property ladder could not push to a big garage or outbuilding !!

If they do this job OK and at the price they quoted, at least you know you've found a decent garage. Its much worse when you cant do the jobs yourself AND the effing garage tries to rip you off. >:(

crank sensor you can do yourself, quite simple.  Stat stuff is doable, but probably a little scary if you're not that confident with spanners ;)

crank sensor is meant to be (relatively) easy but isn't the stat next to the oil cooler in the 'V' so would require quite a bit of stripping down before you can get to it?

Yup.  Easy enough to strip down, but as I say, bit scary if you're not too confident...

I did mine on the side of the road where it broke down  >:(  You don't need a ramp, but you do need a jackstand.  I didn't make it b4 dark today, but if weather is OK I will try to take some piccies and start a guide 2morrow.

When the garage do the crank sensor, make sure to instruct them DO NOT try and re-route the sensor the same way as it is so much easier (and better) to route down the side of the engine.

Also, that is a good price for changing the thermostat as it is not a fun job.... at all!

yes but like most things I bet it's very easy to get to on a 4-pot, however Tone's is a V6 ...

the motors in tomorrow- so even though the crank sensor and eng temp dont seem to be making much difference to the running it will be nice to see if there are any improvements. (the tech2 test came back code 19 and the temp gauge raises just above the bottom white line!) and my mondeo has a bid on it on e-bay !!!!  so looking rosie ! tone.

.........well had the stat, crank sensor AND fuel filter done today £166. minor problem after i took it home the idle went haywire 500 rpm-2600 rpm in traffic- quite worrying ! took it straight back, and as i pulled into the industrial estate where they are located it settled back to normal about 600 rpm. mechanic was very obliging and checked the connections especially the idle control vlv. i then popped the motor home all now ok!!?
car temp now gets up to 1 line below 90C and fans then cut in. used to just creep over bottom line.
car smoother throughout and seems to pull more in higher gears. oh and it was the plastic type crank sensor that i needed (thank gould- bank acc). so at the moment happy driver, ps does anyone else see the fuel gauge drop quickly when it gets down to 60L ? tone.

Might be worth cleaning the ICV...

Yes, my gauge drops quickly from 60l to about half full...
