Oil Leak front of car temp of engine?
« on: 13 September 2019, 16:31:38 »

Hello fellow comfort seekers just been for a relaxing spin in the new (to me) Omega 2.2 16v it seems to run pretty well. Gearbox is silky smooth (auto) and brakes are incredible (my other car is a ford Puma which go forwards very nicely but stopping is another subject).
Couple of issues to start with I have already had some good help from the forum thanks everyone.
It is pulling to the left a little although it has been unused for several months so might just be a sticking caliper?
My main issue is an oil leak at the front of the car under the radiator/oil cooler so I presume it is coming from the oil cooler. If I look down at the oil cooler it appears to have oil around the two alloy pipes going into the top of the cooler? It has had a new radiator fitted so I wonder if the last owner who fitted it has leaned on a pipe and fractured a joint?
What do I need to look out for when removing the oil cooler is it a fairly straightforward item to remove?
Looking through the forum I have seen mention of water and oil mixing from the cooler and radiator are the two connected somehow? seems odd if they are but what do I know.
My Omega is a 2003 model do haynes supply a manual or do we make do with the older version?
Thanks for your time comrades.
P.S how accurate is the real time MPG readout as it is showing some pretty good figures?
PPS The temp gauge stayed within the normal range yet the engine did seem pretty hot when I got home it also heats up to normal temp really quickly does this sound normal or are they a cool running engine normally.

The oil cooler you are talking about is the gearbox one. If the leak is engine oil, it won't be radiator  :y

Thanks for the info Dr Gollum it is transmission fluid (red) as you say so I presume I will need to replace the cooler any thing to watch out for when stripping it out?

The power steering cooler runs across the front of the car behind the bumper, and also uses atf...

Be sure of what's leaking before replacing the gear box oil cooler, which is unlikely to be leaking... Unlike the mild steel steering cooler which is...  ;)

Both easy to replace...

Gearbox cooler simply unbolts from the condenser and radiator and lifts out.

Steering cooler is a couple of bolts and jubilee clips but easier done with bumper off first :y

Thanks for your wisdom Dr Gollum cross fingers it is power steering sounds a lot easier to do then messing around with gearbox levels.

Wouldn't worry too much about the gearbox refill...

Undo the union block and fold the block back to the header tank. Remove the oil cooler. Fit new oil cooler. Fill with fresh atf. Reconnect block. Job jobbed.

Steering cooler will be a lot messier, but just as easy :y

Engine temp. sounds normal to me. Iv always found the MPG readouts in Omegas to be pretty accurate.

Thanks am I right in thinking the gearbox cooler is the middle one sandwiched between the power steering cooler at the front? and the radiator. That is a big cooler for the power steering if so not that I know what size they are 'normally'

Power steering cooler is a loop of pipe between the bumper and front fan.

Gearbox cooler sits between aircon condenser and coolant radiator.

Engine oil cooler sits between the oil filter and block on the four cylinder  ;)

Confirmed the source of the leak it is coming from the union block and running down the gearbox cooler will take it of tomorrow if I get time.

Star drive allen key on top I presume to take it off, but what does the circlip in the side hold maybe with a little mastic i can take it apart and repair it?

Don’t remember any circlips :-\

Torx bolt not an Allen one. Leak could be as simple as damaged O rings before you get carried away shopping ;)
