Main dealer code read
« on: 07 August 2023, 12:56:13 »

Took wifey's car down to Perrys Vauxhall for a service this morning. The chap in front of me was trying to explain the problems he was having. The young girl behind the desk (whose fingernails were so long I thought there was no way she could type, but she did) said that they'd read the codes and see what's what. £141!!  :o
I'm sure it was 'only' £70 or so a couple of years ago.

Is that £141 for the service or just to read the codes?

‘THE CHAP IN FRONT’ had his codes read.

STEMO took his wife’s car for a service. The two things are not related.  :)

And yes, that does sound expensive.

doesn't surprise me. I believe Mercedes charge £195 to just have a look aka diagnostic fee.

I once rang to ask how much to fit blah blah blah .... the reply was, we'd need to charge you a diagnostic fee first  ??? I didn't need anything diagnosing ... just a price to fit.

It's your own fault.

You ramble on about the length of the receptionist's nails.....then you talk about codes that are nothing to do with your car....then you briefly mention something about a service for your new Vauxhall Gangbang. :) :P :P

No shit. But if he had a service then they would read the codes for free.

Hyundai wanted to diagnose my driver's seatbelt when I had the Terracan, I told them I know what wants doing just fit a new one which they did , it's a total con at main dealers. When the Range Rover is serviced at my independent at Peterborough I always get a printout of the diagnostic results at every service included in the price.

Can't say i've ever used a dealer to read codes, just buy the dealer diags, or as a minimum use a generic OBDII app and a bluetooth OBDII dongle.

Understandable to use a dealer if you don't understand / have access too the diags though, but at that price it would have paid for itself in most cases.

Yeah, but if you need the dealer to do the work, they won't accept your diagnosis.

They read the codes whether you ask them to or not. They have to otherwise everyone could turn around and blame them if it came back.

The total con, as Alf Garnet calls it, is that the starting point of fixing a fault code seems to be 'Replace the sensor' rather than to diagnose the live data.

MB want to charge you you diagnose a fault whether it's for a fault code or a dodgy mechanical fault

Not unreasonable as diagnosis takes time and equipment. They make their profit changing oil... It takes longer for the customer interaction than the actual job.
