It needs doing immediately, from the sound of it.

Make sure that only genuine Vx parts are used.

If you are not having it done at a dealers, make sure that they have the correct cam locking tool.

Also, get them to change the auxiliary belt as well.

Parts should be in the region £100/£120 I think, + 1.1/2 hours labour.

i'll draw out £900 then!

I thought it would be worse, having said that they could still upset me with a "mask and stripey jumper" figure!

including the service quote they gave me on monday i should be lookin at about £400 if they're kind, which i'd be quite happy to pay

some may call me a mug...?

Most of the blokes on here would do it for you, and snatch your hand off for half that ;D

It isn't a difficult job, get a Haynes manual, a few tools, and have a go yourself, with the guidance of this site.

A first timer should be able to do it in about 3 hours.

Probably a stupid comment, but, is your battery OK?  It could be battery acid coming from the overflow...  Also, the radiator drain is under there,, would suspect coloured fluid as previously stated though!!!

no evidence of leakage found from anywhere, leading me to believe just condensation. it was clean water

I am probably wrong.....but i never seen condensation leave a leak like that!.....ok yes after a few hours.....but you said it was twice the size patch in the morning.....any condensation would have evaporated and dried by then.....im not convinced  :-/

400 quid sounds lika a reasonable price IF it includes the water pump and the auxilliary belt. It's an easy enough job, but I had mine serviced at a garage anyway a few weeks ago, just to get the freakin' service stamp in the booklet. Makes the car easier to sell later on. But next time I'll save my money and do it myself.

A lot of people have said this already: the water can't really be coming from the water pump if it has no smell or colour. Are you sure you're not having just plain water in the washer container?

JUST A THOUGHT
Is the car when parked slightly down on the nearside ie camber of road, nearside in the gutter say.
If so this drip ie pool overnight could be condensation from the bonnet area etc running down the channel and making its way to the lowest point ie above the nearside headlight and running from there to the ground about were you are seeing it.
Park the otherway round ie offside down and see if its still coming from the same spot.
