Post by: Mr Skrunts on 13 December 2023, 22:58:53
Was going to buy a mate a bottle of Jack D, but found out earlier he is off Whisky, but big in to various Kraft Beers.

I know nothing and certaily clueless with regards to Kraft Beers.

Assuming he isn't into them purely as a "look at me" type, craft beers can vary so widely I'd go with a good selection from multiple breweries :y

My lawn looks like a Ukrainian battlefield since a nearby neighbour had new fences put up, so no I don't recommend bastid badgers at all!    :o  >:(  :-X

Thought Kraft made cheese ?  :D
Daughter bought me a selection of Craft beers a couple of years ago. Brew Dog iirc.
Found all of them to be hideous. Just tasted like yeast flavoured water with a hint of something Citrus.
The little club Im a Trustee of sells a Nethergate Ale (local brewery) which is very moreish.
If I didnt have to drive there and back, I could happily down several pints of it.

We have our own Brewdog, but you can only get it on board.

It's pretty easy drinking, not dissimilar to Sharps Atlantic. It's normally £5/6 a can if you have to pay for it but we get it for 60p :y

Suffice to say I usually have a few cans in the fridge.

On no level would I consider Brewdog to be a craft beer though ;D

Aldi have some nice beers in. I generally don't give a toss about kraftwerk but their Coffee Stout and their Caramel Biscuit beer are very very nice.

Also their Biere Special, big opaque black bottle. Lush.

The west coast of the US seems to be a craft beer utopia. Not sure that it's anywhere near Elscar though :D

As its just down the road from me, I've been known to pick up some lager-ish beers from Diddly Squat, its a grey label, buggered if I can remember what its called.  Its a very pleasant tipple in the garden after a day at work, but its easy to get stuck into and have far too many ;D

I've given up trying them, because every one conformed to the more is always better approach. Which leads to IPAs that are like drinking liquid desiccant, or that taste like they're a 50/50 mix of weak beer and concentrated ugly fruit syrup. While a good session beer is a very English idea, a good speciality beer still retains some subtlety and drinkability

My local is the Nelson Brewery, less than two miles away in the dockyard. Their beers are extremely drinkable, but are hard to find. Next is Goachers out the other side of Maidstone. It's much easier to find, but tastes like yesterday's dishwater strained through a farmer's socks :-[

True but the American idea of beer is Budweiser, so pretty much anything is an improvement  >:D

If you don't chill Budweiser, then you discover that it has lots of taste. The snag is that it tastes bloody horrible. US craft beers(nobody else calls them that, so the US is redundant) just go for even stronger, not better, or even different.

Yard House offer a reasonable selection of draft beers, and Lone Star is halfway decent  :y

A few years ago when I house sat my mates place in Houston, the Pub round the corner called the Shakespeare is a craft beer place and has a huge horseshoe shaped bar with about 30 different draught craft beers.   It would have been rude not to have tried them all!  :y

On my last trip to the US we took some customers to a brewery tap and most of the beers were porters and started at about 7 1/2%.
I decided it would be rude not to try a few but that did put me in a bit of a muddle. ::)

That's the trouble with the non-fizzy stuff - you can drink gallons of it, then suddenly realise that you're paralysed from the waist down.  So I've heard, anyway ::)

Makes a change for the septic tanks though. Their beer has usually been made from what they have carefully extracted from the bladders of countless gnats.  :)

If Carlsberg made beer in the U.S. it would be renamed Girlsberg.  :D

The reason that Australians drink their beer ice cold is because it's shite and you can't taste it when it's almost a frozen block of lager!  ;D

I used to like a can of Fosters, preferred it to most of the other mainstream brands.

My absolute favourite used to be Carlsberg Special, I can't remember why  ;D

Nothing to do with the 9% strength I’m sure.   ;D  My mates Dad used to drink a few Tenants Extra (also 9%) after a day at work, and fall asleep on the sofa as a nightly ritual. He was a roofer so not ideal. ;D

SWMBO used to have the occasional Special Brew when she visited her sister. My eldest called it fizzy whiskey.  ;D

Yes, it seems the US are finally developing some taste in beer and shunning the bud / coors / michelob p*ss.

The Australians are a lost cause. Which is why when my mate came over from Aus for a 24h radio contest earlier this year, in his enthusiasm, he got through a polypin of Exmoor Beast on the first evening then slept through the rest of the weekend. It was jet lag, apparently. ;D

You could always tell the Brits who'd just got off the plane in the pubs around Kings Cross in Sydney as they'd be the only ones drinking Fosters.  :)

As well as the lily white or burnt skin of course!  ;D

My brother's local used to have Rekordelig on tap, but rather than being the usual squash flavours, it was the unpolluted variety (with the fruity stuff as an add in for those of a certain disposition) and you could drink four/five pints of that before the seal broke, but that was usually the point when you discovered that someone had stolen your legs ;D

The chilled fizzy stuff has a place in life.  Hard to beat on a hot day.  On a hot day, I'm also partial to a pint of fizzy apple juice

If I have lager I always go for the 5% ABV products like San Miguel.

The 'pissy' 3-3.5% stuff is a waste of time.

In long gone days we used to make our own moonshine, which was evil. >:D

Speaking of moonshine. When I was 17 I was a very nervous best man at my mates shotgun wedding.
Was up half the night trying to write a speach, which the grooms brother tore up and threw away because he thought it would be funny.
I was in a state of sheer panic then, so the grooms boss made me drink a large glass of Poteen to calm me down !
Apparently I did more or less what I was supposed to do, but to this day I have no memory of the events whatsoever.  ;D ;D
