The cambelt is due on my Mondeo and I'm considering doing it myself. ::) :-\ There are a few good guides and it looks reasonably straight forward, although the reality will probably be very different! ::) ;D
Due to space limitations, it's recommended to have a decent impact wrench, so I'm looking for recommendations! :)
TIA! :y

Not at all, but I've never been noted for my wisdom. ;D

Something we share in common. :)

If I do it, I fully expect it to be a complete PITA, and I'll spend the entire time doing it regretting not taking it to the garage. ;D
It'll be about 400 notes for the cambelt kit, water pump, aux belt and tensioner, supplied, fitted and VAT at a local garage. I can get the parts for less than 150 or less than 200 for genuine ford bits. Tempting. :)
Then with the money saved I can buy an Impact wrench which I'll always have. :y

At least you'll have the beemer to fall back on when you break the mondeo. And think of the laugh you'll give the lads at the garage when they have to recover it to finish the job.

Yes and Yes. ;D

If going cordless you'll need to spend a few hundred on one to get a crank bolt off but clarkes corded one is nearer £50 and is reputed to be a big hitter

Optimistic?
His BMW is older than Moses. One of the last Victorian German cars still running. ;)
Of course, the mighty Signum is above anything as crude as a belt. :)

Someone said on the TalkFord forum that they couldn't get the crank bolt off with a cordless Clarke impact wrench that they had bought for the job. ::)
Hence my request for recommendations, but instead I get Lord Opti and Uncle STEMO weighing in with the piss take! ::)
I guess the day care centre is closed on a Saturday! :-\ ;D ;D ;D

I bought one of these last year
https://www.ryobitools.com/products/details/18v-lithium-plus-impact-wrench-kit
Yes, its not cheap
Yes, you will have to buy the battery and a charger separate if you haven't got one.
But if your looking at replacing your battery power tools in the future, its worth it because one you have a charger and battery, you just need to buy the tool as and when.
Must say, its had some serious use (suspension / bearings ect) but its never failed to undo anything :y
Also shop around because some shops really take the piss :(

Noooooooo......that's me being helpful, you'd know about it if I was taking the piss. ;D

On batteries, if going down this route, pick up a big (4.0ah plus) battery as the smaller 1-2ah ones limit the performance of these tools.

I bought my Makita drill a few years ago with the thought that any further cordless tools I bought would be body only Makitas. :y
Then Makita went and changed their batteries! >:( ::)

Keep meaning to treat myself to one, but I find breaker bar good enough for the big jobs. Tough to justify the cost. More of a luxury item for me. :(

I'm trying to justify the cost with the money I'll save doing the Mondeo's cambelt myself. ::)
I can see how it would be handy in a tight spot where it's difficult to swing a breaker bar though. I was looking at the diff on the BMW today and taking the fill and drain plugs out would be so much easier with an impact wrench. :y
Then I've a fencing job to do where I'll need to use some long coach bolts and banging them in with an impact wrench would be a piece of P, compared to using a ratchet! :y
-
I've just treated myself to a new Makita drill and impact driver plus 2 X 5ah batteries (£50 off in sale plus 30% staff discount - rude not to ;D). Came to about £130 after selling off my old Ryobi kit.
This will get bought as soon as I have half an excuse ;D

That said, for not a lot more you could probably get an air setup :-\

Buy it quickly Jimmy before the bastards change their batteries again! ;D

The 'extra-high max tightening torque' will come in handy for wheel nuts if you ever get a job at a garage.

Saw those, but they were air guns so I'd need a compressor and all the kit. :-\

I quite like the look of the Ryobi that TG pointed too earlier and although it's still a bit more than I wanted to spend, this (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ryobi-ONE-R18IW3-120S-18V-400Nm-Impact-Wrench-with-2-0Ah-Battery-Super-Charge/183360632941?epid=11017412364&hash=item2ab125386d:g:ehwAAOSwGL1bZb18) seems a reasonable price as it includes battery and charger. :)
Thanks for the tip Mr Gonads! :y

Having used cordless tools regularly, heavy drain tools such as this, or cordless circular saws and angle grinders etc, really need 4 or 5 ah batteries. 2 ah will work ok, but you need two or three so that one is always charging whilst you're working, otherwise you will run of of battery power. Cordless drills or impact drivers seem to be ok with 2 ah in my experience but I would still have at least two available whilst using them.

a cordless Clarke impact wrench
That 24v PoS, like the Sealey one from the same chinky factory, wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding... ...I foolishly bought a 2nd one after being convinced that the first was just faulty, as its claimed to be 450Nm.
My little DeWalt 200Nm 18v one is far more powerful by some margin, and if that doesn't get a wheelnut off, I know I need the scaffold bar and some Weetabix.

I've got one of these below. Superb bit of kit.

Yes, but he said corded, not cordless ;) (Or "mains powered" in normal person English ;D )

No worries but as Jimmie said earlier, buy the largest battery you can afford because it does make a difference.
I purchased a small 1.3 and later a 5aH battery.
Also I don't know if your on arsebook but I picked up on of these ..................

Local, complete with a good blade fitted, spare blade, all the tools and in as new condition for 25 quid yesterday so once you start collecting, its worth looking out for bargains like this :y

I would honestly buy the bare unit and a 4-5.0ah battery + charger. The mistake a lot of people make when looking at these is that they link battery size to only longevity per charge. The issue is that the bigger batteries can also discharge more power more quickly. So unless you go for a big battery, you won't get close to the quoted torque specs. :y
EDIT:
Buying them direct from ryobi and seperately will give you a 5.0ah, charger and the windy gun, and a saving of £32. :y

Naked, about £80 IIRC.
Its a smaller bodied one, which means easier to get into tighter spaces, and far easier to hold. It has a variable trigger, which is a million times better than the on/off types. Far more powerful in the real world than the Clarke/Sealey/Chinese nobrand ones.
If I needed one more powerful, the only large style one I'd consider is the Snap-off one.
-
Obselete now, but think this is the one I have
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Advanced-DeWalt-DC820-Impact-Wrenches/dp/B00I9F7FOW
I run it off 2Ahr nicads IIRC. NiCads have the ability to give more punch than Lithiums, at the expense of running time, but if I was buying a new set now, I think I'd strongly consider Lithium tech.
Given the decent prices (they are always on a good offer somewhere), and my experiences with the rest of my matching set (XRP drill, right angle drill, DC825 impact screwdriver, leccy screwdriver, impact gun, torch etc), Posh wank&decker (DeWalt) would be near the top of my list. Though they do some shite as well, like the plastic chucked drills that shitfix pile high and sell cheap, which aren't a patch on the real stuff.
-
I see what you mean TB about the larger and smaller bodies on these tools, and it would be just my luck to find that I'd spent a lot of cash to find I couldn't fit it in the available space when I got to do the cam belt. ::) :-\
