Which car has been you favourite to own/drive.......
« on: 07 February 2017, 17:45:34 »

and which do you regret getting rid of?

Of all my cars over the years I would have the following list:-

BMW 750i V12 5.4 - Comfort with speed and all the toys of the day
Jaguar V12 XJ-S - Again all the comfort and speed
Mitsubishi GTO V6 3.0 - No comfort (hard as fook) but brilliant fun to drive
Jaguar S-Type Tractor - Nice all rounder in terms of comfort and performace

My biggest regret was getting rid of the top two and certainly the XJ-S which has increased substantially in price since I owned it  :'( :'(

Has to be the Chevette HS. Then the 24V Senator. I think I will miss my 190D if it doesn't outlast me as it has character.
I'm trying not to get too fond of my current 3.2 Elite, as I have a short bucket list of cars I want to own before settling into senility.

Has to be the Cosworth, Sierra Sapphire, G Plate RWD, Ebony Black, Full Leather inside, the very last of the RWD's (last 50 from memory) before they went 4x4 were all a special production run of Ebony Black.

Only Mods it had was a 4x4 Vented Bonnet, and the usual, ECU Remap, Green Injectors, upgraded Turbo and Actuator bringing up to around 300 BHP.

Toys, didn't need any, the whole car was a Toy.  :D

Sold it a few years back, got my money back but therve shot up these days, probably would be around the +10K mark today.  >:(

1984 2.0S Capri in Caspian blue. Aside from a dent in the OSF wing, it was straight, rust free and tight to drive. I quickly fitted a fuel injected Pinto from a Sierra(including buying the Sierra I spent £170 on the whole job), which when fitted with a Kent FR34 cam would outperform a manual 3.0 and still do 40mpg on the motorway. And that was important, as I did about 90,000miles in the three years I owned it. With some very basic tweaks to the suspension it was properly balanced and rode well too

It's the only car I wish I had never sold.

'84 Granada 2.8I Ghia X manual. Scrapped following gearbox failure :'(

Sat on the drive for two years before I finally got rid.

Yet to own my best car ever, although my white Omega was like putting on a pair of well worn shoes... Just right.

I had a mk1 1600GT Capri many years ago. Never liked it from the first day I had it. It was totally reliable though, I will give it that.

I owned a 1974 (M) 1600XL Capri MK1. White with a BVR.

Looked good, Drove like a lorry.

Cambelt snapped but no harm done to the engine. Just lucky, I suppose.

2.0l Pintos are safe. 1.6 Pintos are sometimes. The valve lengths are different if I remember correctly.
Pinto cambelts are doable at the side of the road in about 20minutes if you have the splined tool for the belt tensioner.

Has to be Mrs. Kw's Mk2 MX5.

Moved it on 6 months ago and I still haven't quite come to terms with it. You could jump into it and use every ounce of its' (admittedly modest) performance out of the box, it just handled so nicely, and with 170k on the clock by the end too. It also looked great and had a nice comfy ride.

Newer one is, on paper the better car. More power, more grip, newer, less miles, but ride quality and feedback is poor in comparison. A more comfortable motorway cruiser, which is probably what most people buy a roadster for these days. ::)

I have other favourite cars, but they aren't "has been"s. ;)

I had a 1600 & a 1600 GT engine/head (the valves were bigger than a standard 1600 ... IIRC) &  remember winding both head's cams over on the bench .... both were safe

A 1980 Ford Cortina estate that I bought in Sydney for £400.  I drove 'Yolanda' all the way round Australia, and all I did to her was flush the rad, fitted a set of headlight bulbs and put fuel in her!  :y

When my visa ran out and I had to leave Oz, I sold her for £600!  :)

My old MR2 Roadster for the same reasons KW loved hisMrs KWs MX5 - it was great out of the box, and by the time I sold it, much much better (turbocharged, more chassis bracing than you could shake a stick at, etc).  Although I did regret my choice of clutch (floating plate, sounded like shaking a cutlery drawer when you disengaged the clutch ;D)

Favourite: Probably my original, and still the best, Omega (The Silver Bullet). I've had it for nearly 150k/13yrs, so it just pips my next favourite, my little Rover 25 which I had for 116k/12yrs.

Omega still going strong, though shedding weight with every bump. Rover was caught up in a Pisshat/Laguna/A5/Armco sandwich, and didn't survive.

Cars I've regretted selling: Omega Elite TD (aka TB2/TRACTOR!).

One I can't make my mind up on is MkII Astra GTE. We both loved it, esp Mrs TB, but the insurance and the general hassle of owning it turned it sour.

Old school favourite, and the car with a place in my heart was my MK3 3.0S Capri. I was young, it was fast.  ::)
In later years, my favourite would be my E92 335, it was a lovely motor to drive.  :y

My all-time favourite  would be the Alfa Guilia 1.6 twin cam on Delortos - but not on a winter cold-start. (It lived outside and did not thank me for it).

Most regret at selling could be either the E93a Ford Pop, uprated with a 10HP van engine and transmission and the optional heater assembly or the '64 Zodiac ex-Police fitted with triple brass SUs and a valve radio. The Zodiac had advanced tinworm and was knackered in every department, the Pop had woodworm  :o in addition to tinworm so perhaps I did well to move them on.

Most fun was my '66 Hillman Imp Super, lowered, cambered, part space-framed, Greetham 998 Gp6 engine on twin 45mm twin choke Delortos, Aston Martin "silencer", Hewland gearbox and 10500 rpm available. Far more performance than I had talent for but great, if anti-social, fun.

One of my favourites was any one of my three MKII Cavalier SRi`s, nice drive, fairly quick and a doddle to work on  :y
Next favourite is my 24v Senator, it would run rings round my MV6 just not as nice a cabin as the Omega
But my favourite so far Is my 370z, which being twelve years younger than my Omega it ought to be, a drive to the shops nearly always ends in an hour long jaunt for no reason at all except I love driving it  :)

Vauxhall Carlton 3.0 ltr 24v Gsi.

Couldn't leave it anywhere unattended though, as all the low life attempted to steal it.

Became a nightmare to own, eventually gave it up when it was stolen by a gang of ram raiders.

Up until the last 6 months I've always had manual cars with sports suspension, normally SRI or VXRs and they've been good fun.
However I'm more relaxed driving the Omega, right up to the point were someone parks right close.

Mk 1 Cavaliers were a good old car. My Dad bought a new one every year for the first three years of production.Which I found slightly bizarre. Even more bizarre was the fact that he bought the L version each time, despite my protests.  ::)
My current 3.2 Elite Omega is moving up the list of my favourites. It really is a very nice car, and doesn't seem to have taken any notice of the 175k miles on its clock.

A mate had an omega 2.2 years ago as a private hire. It did nearly 500k by the time he got rid of it. Still souded like a good car .not like nowadays when some taxis sound like "all the bolts holding the suspension together !" Are loose !

My Austin 1100. I wiled away the hours playing 'guess what gear you're in', after actually managing to catch hold of the gear stick as it jumped back and forth as the engine rolled in its mountings.

On my Cooper S I could change from 1st to 2nd without touching the stick. I'd accelerate in 1st gear, then back off and the stick would drop in to 2nd on its own.  ::)  Add to that a knackered synchro that let it jump out of top gear at the most inopportune moment.  ::)
I did eventually rebuild the gearbox but those traits certainly didn't make it my favourite.  ;D

I'd say my fav was a Merc SLK I bought in my yoof.
I wanted a convertible but didn't want a rag top. I could see a vandal putting a knife throw a cloth top where I have to park, on the road.
Merc where the only manu at the time that did a folding metal roof.
Paid nearly £35k for it and unless I win the lottery I wont be buying another new car in that price range!

Sold it after 2.5 years as Id just bought HollyDog and having a puppy in a 2 seater, trying to climb over you when driving wasn't ideal  ::)

Bought my first diesel next (Holly's car as I called it) Merc C220 estate.....you will cringe if I told you how much depreciation the SLK had  :-[

My omega for comfort and refinement, my Astra VXR for brutal pace and the ability to humiliate the odd boxter driver

If I am allowed to nominate a motorbike, it has to be my first ever vehicle - a BSA Gold Flash - bought at the tender age of just 20 (a mere few years ago ::)) and lived in London. I thought it would be easier and safer to ride it around my local (East Ham) streets after dark. Possibly a mistake, but I did learn some roadcraft!
If it has to be a car, then it has to be a first again, my 1938 Morris 12-4 Series III - so comfortable and it did attract attention.
Worst? Citroen GSA - evil son of a bachelor with almost everything difficult to work on!

Best car - mk2 escort, 1760 cosworth/lotus hybrid. Sky-high the log book says 1.1 pop. Still own that one though

Regret selling - chevette that was my first car. Never let me down despite all the abuse I gave it as it was my first, but I learnt how to rebuild cars with her so I owe her, not the other way round.
