Title: Could be quite expensive.
Post by: 2boxerdogs on 05 April 2019, 19:03:58
Came back from Sussex at the weekend noticed that the clutch was just starting to slip in 3rd gear under load, so now booked in at the dealership on Thursday for new clutch & dual mass flywheel, couldn't risk towing the caravan back so that's in temporary storage at Battle.

.

Spoke to a fellow caravnner about 4 years ago at Sandringham in Norfolk who had just had the clutch & flywheel replaced on his Terracan for £1300 , so I know what to expect roughly always keep  cash in a "slush fund" for things like this fortunately.

Sounds about right. They are a consumable item.

Had a think about my history of clutches. In my youth I used to change them myself . They were simple and cheaper in those days. Had the 4x4 done and that was 400 with the part 240 of that.

Only the 2nd time in 48 years of driving that I'm having a clutch replaced, had about 35 vehicles in total so not bad !

WAY back, I did mine on an Austin A30, aligning the friction plate with my special tool - a hammer handle!
Simple job, and it worked fine: happy days.....

Trouble is, cost of a garage clutch change far exceeds the value of the car. I scrapped Senators as their clutches failed. JamesV6CDX taught me to change Omega clutches, but now the parts alone cost more than the car's value.

Spent £1700 on it last year timing belt brakes + various steering parts belt next due in 2024. So will get this done and when I retire fully in 2022 will replace it with a Landcruiser. Has been a very reliable & useful vehicle has never failed to start first time & has coped with everything I've put it through. 😎

DG, I was meaning more the A30 (not sure I know how large/tall a terracan is),  but you are right - there is more of me now than in yesteryear! :-[

In fact there is a bit less of me down from 18 stone to 15
but I can't be arsed to mess around under cars anymore.😉

why is clutch replacement like on a Cavalier with an F16.5 Gearbox.

I picked up a NOS Clutch for £15, off the Electronic Man in a Pub that is the Bay of E, and paid someone £20 to fit it, because it's a 20 minute job. Apparently.

It's not really possible to do that on a RWD gearbox.
But it would make a lot more sense on current complex FWD installations

My mk2 Astra was probably the same design.

Take the nearside front wheel off and remove a plug in the gearbox end cover, Undo the clutch pressure plate bolts through an opening between the engine and gearbox. Pull the drive shaft out of the end of the gearbox and lift the clutch out.

Assembly is the reverse of disassembly......

It took me 20 minutes to get the car on axle stands and remove the front wheel but it might have been a 20 minute job with access to a car lift.

£1300 is more than I've ever paid for a car let alone putting a clutch in one :o

You don't want to be man handling a TerribleCan box on a drive, they are very big and very heavy and worse still with the transfer box still attached.

I wouldn't even attempt it , main dealership job I'm afraid they've always looked after it .

Me too - triggers my biggest fear of dealers, the "They broke something and don't want to tell me" fear.

Picked the 4x4 up this morning the delay was because the replacement took 13 hours in total not 3 as costed by Hyundai , fortunately I had agreed to the original quote before work commenced 😉
Labour 275.07
Parts 1114.28
VAT 277.87 Total 1667.22
I spoke with the workshop foreman this morning, used to be a neighbour till we moved & he told me the sheer weight of the unit caused the biggest problems but if they get another one in the price would be a lot different !
So back to Sussex tomorrow to collect the caravan.

If it suits your needs and looks ok (which I know yours does) why not keep it till it doesn't suit your needs and it doesn't look ok?

Exactly right Stemo it's only done just over 80,000 miles should be good for at least another 150,000 I will probably cover only around 30,000 if I keep it another 3 years, so financially to keep it up to scratch makes sense.

Exactly :y.

Replace because its expensive/unreliable, because its got too tatty, or because you just fancy something different :)

Its personal choice.

What were they playing at, its not that hard to change with a ramp, there just big and heavy boxes (yet still rather weak)

I guess at the price a new flywheel was fitted to ?  :y

Wise of Tilbo to get a quotation before the work commenced. I imagine the Hyundai labour figure is based on the lads doing the job having done a few before and knowing what they were doing.

James CDX's clutch change description says it can be done in four hours without help, impressive.
The first one I did took longer than that, things kept going wrong; gearbox not coming off as expected, not going back on easily, hydraulic hose reconnection, gear linkage reassembly, etc.

In the 1970s a mobile mechanic, Martin Semmler, changed the clutch on my Peugeot 505GTI family estate, in my drive, in a morning, for about £100, seemed cheap enough.
