That thought had crossed my mind also. Easy to forget in our busy lives.
I may just put a note on & say you have a week or i'll make a phone call

Its possible that the owner is a scumbag and any polite note would be scrunched up and ridiculed.
So i would leave a note saying "Get it taxed or lose it tommorrow!"
Then if it appears the next day untaxed,i suggest a pipe bomb taped to the inlet manifold.

A can of expanding foam up the tailpipe, discreetly cleaned off at the exit can confound even the experts
