Cleaning Dishes
« on: 12 November 2012, 20:21:26 »

I got a right rollicking from swmbo earlier about her finding food residue on the dishes after I had tidied away. She insinuated I needed to wear glasses before donning the marigolds! ???
When she went upstairs I gave the dogs a bollicking for slacking on the job! ;D
I still remember the 'chain of command' even after all these years.  :D :y

If/when I finally get the kitchen redone .. I've already decided that the existing dishwasher is getting relocated to the garage ;D

Here's something to ponder before you do that...... ::)
Last Thursday morning at about 3am I awoke with , what I thought was a strong smell / taste of diesel in the bedroom.I considered what it could be for a moment and then slipped off to sleep again . At 3.20am I again awoke because of my wife coughing loudly and then the little grey cells kicked in realising that the smell and the coughing were linked. Lights on and dodging the cats that were running around wildly we got up and searched to find the source of the acrid tear inducing fumes that had filled the house.  No smoke , therefore no alarm ,you understand just those choking fumes.
We quickly traced it to the dishwasher and when I opened it it was apparent what had happened.
Sheilagh had put it on when we went to bed as we often do. When the cycle had ended the heating element had not switched off . A plastic flexible cutting / breadboard was sitting vertically at the edge of the tray . As the temp increased within the machine the plastic board had slowly started to melt to a point where it touched the element .When I opened the door there was initially no flame but within seconds of the inrush of oxygen the melted area ignited in a tiny little insignificant flame that within less than 5 minutes would have burnt the house down.
It was a bloody shock to us I can tell you , the machine was a 10 year old Bosch.
Although it happened when we were in bed we would also occassionaly put the dishwasher on when we went out during the day , had we not have been in the house there is no doubt what would have happened.  :o
We learned a salutary lesson there , not to leave equipment running in an unoccupied house, or garage !
€ 500 out of pocket , new machine installed ,thanks given to him above , peace of mind reinstated . :)

Hmm. That's nasty. I would have thought the machine would at least have a thermal fuse as a second line of defence against overheating. Thank god it woke you up. :(

Baffled me too Kevin , but I had no interest in opening it up to look at it again as the residue still gave off a noxious smell. .
I say that the element had remained on but it could possibly have been that it stalled midcycle when heating the water ( cold fill ) and due to the heat generated the water evaporated off .
Who knows , it's in the recycling plant now and on it's way to becomming a Kia or something....... :y

I'd have thought that melting plastic fumes would have set the smoke alarm(s) off?  :-\
