Come out from work tonight to find a dead battery (dim warning lights and no action from starter) so taking the battery to be dead. Is there a quick guide on here to putting a new one in so I know which tools I'll need to take on the bus tomorrow? Not changed one myself before.

Zero marks from Tesco Breakdown who seem to have 'forgotten' about my phone call to renew in October, as a result no cover  . Just as well they didn't charge me for it.

My CD Changer won't play CD's burned on my PC, probably due to its age (1999), so looking to get one from a facelift. Can you facelift owners play home-made CDs in your changers, and is it a straight swap?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Seized Door Lock

My drivers door lock has been playing up for a few days - I thought maybe the solenoid needs greasing or replacing, however tonight the door lock seized completely so I cannot unlock the drivers door to open it, so had to climb across from passenger side to get in and out. 

The pin is stuck down and I cannot unlock the drivers door with the fob, key or interior handle (or combination of any) so how do I get the door open to get the card off??   :-?

Is this likely to just be the solenoid or am I looking at a new c/l motor?

Is there anyone in Norfolk on here with a TechII? I need to find out what's triggering the alarm - guessing it's the bonnet switch as it tends to go off when the sun is shining on the bonnet, but would like to check before I start disconnecting things.

Omega General Help / A/C refill valve

Has anyone changed one of these? On a trip to Halfrauds I got them to recharge the aircon but the refrigerant blasted out the refill pipe when the can was unplugged, so got a replacement valve and cap from Vx. The plan is to fit it then get a proper A/C engineer over to service it and refill the condenser.

Omega General Help / Another week, another leak

Took the Elite to the garage tonight so I could get underneath to pop the front headlight levelling sensor back onto the wishbone, and noticed while I was under there the gearbox was covered in antifreeze. It's coming from the back of the engine but more on the passenger side.

As far as we could see it's coming from somewhere above the oil filter but couldn't see any higher up than that. My first thought was HBV but that's on drivers side. Any other ideas?

The leak isn't too bad as the coolant level hasn't dropped much but want to get it fixed before we go on holiday next month - the Elite will be climbing Welsh hills for a fortnight...

Also noticed a small leak from the diff. Pinion seal?

Omega General Help / Changed C/L motor but still not quite working

Just spent a couple of hours changing the motor in my driver's door lock for one from one of Daz's scraps. The motor is working fine but the rod & pin is still not quite lifting enough to unlock the door, requiring the key or manually lifting the pin the final millimetre to pop it up enough to unlock.

Presume this would mean a new mechanism with the brown casing is also required?  :-/ I have given the mechanism a good dose of grease while it was apart.

Just out of interest which part is the solenoid? Is this in the motor itself or the mechanism with the brown casing?

And the guide on here was very useful - much better than the shi77y pics & instructions in the Haynes book of lies.

Omega General Help / Grey bumper trim

Yes it's grey - not black, and no amount of Back-to-Black, TurtleWax Black or Black Trim wipes will make it black again, so I'm thinking of colour-coding them instead.

Apart from the usual sanding with wet-n-dry do I need to apply any other preparation to the plastic to stop the primer reacting with it? I'll be using Holts primer & main colour (Polar Blue) just need to get the lacquer.

Omega General Help / Door membrane

How much roughly is a door membrane? (Driver's door). I went to replace the lock at the weekend and found the membrane has been tampered with before and superglued to the door  so simply peeling it off is a no-go. I should've got the hint to leave the door alone when I found the door pull handle was glued on as well.

Omega General Help / Torque converter not locking

A couple of times today (i.e going to work and at lunchtime) when driving along the A47 the torque converter didn't lock at 50mph therefore when on cruise control the revs were rising on inclines destroying my mpg. Is this a typical ATF symptom or something else? It only happens if the engine isn't up to operating temp, once up to temp the tc is fine.

As some of you know, Daz changed amongst many other things last week, both the front wishbones, which has cured the knocking I was getting on speed bumps and under braking. However I still get a creak from the front when going over the speed bumps in our estate, but only when the car is first started. On the way home I don't get the noise. Thinking the drop links on the front need to be changed also, but could it also be the coils? I just find it odd it only happens after the car has been standing a while.

Omega General Help / Wishbone bushes

OK me & Daz are trying to decipher which bushes on the front wishbones needs replacing. From what I can gather from the garage the bushes that have gone are where the rear bushes on the front wishbones on the front suspension meet the chassis via a ball joint & flange pad. Does anyone know if these bushes are related to the steering idler or track rods?

Omega General Help / Sharp gear change on auto

Recently my Elite's auto-box has started delaying changing from 2nd to 3rd and the gearchange is a a bit sharp. Changing all other gears is still silky smooth and it doesn't always happen. I checked the atf and it seems fine, although the Elite is being serviced in Jan anyway, but could there be anything else to look for?
