Wanted - Facelift Saloon factory Elite spoiler
« on: 18 September 2020, 09:41:24 »

Hi all,

Moved to New Zealand over 10 years ago and managed to pick up a facelift saloon Omega over here (very very rare cars over here), and really want to install an Elite/MV6 rear bootlid spoiler for it,

This type here
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2003_Vauxhall_Omega_Elite_V6_Automatic_3.2_Rear.jpg

Problem is these cars are non existent over here in NZ,

Is there anyone that has one for sale who would be willing to sell and ship to New Zealand? (At my cost of course).

Thanks,
Jamie

Joking aside ::)

There's none obviously available for sale, even on Ebay.de, which used to be a really good source of that sort of thing.

A practical suggestion would be to obtain/modify a Monaro or Commodore SS bootlid spoiler...  :-\

I think the main problem (if you can find one) is that the majority will still be attached to boot lids. Obviously they can be removed, but this isn't the easiest thing to do successfully without causing damage to the spoiler and also to the boot lid itself due to the bonding used to attach it. I have three on boot lids but possibly like the majority, would prefer to keep them as one unit should a replacement ever be needed.
Also the 'Omega 3.2 V6' name plate on the boot lids (as is the 2.6) is also now no longer available new, and succesfully removing them from an old lid and reattaching them to a different boot lid in a straight line and in the correct position is very time consuming (as they are separate letters on the later cars). Using the method as they were originally supplied holds them all together with the correct spacing and positioning and takes less than a minute.
So basically, finding a spoiler that some one is happy to seperate from a good used boot lid may not be an easy task.....as I for one would want to keep the lid, spoiler and name plate all together as one unit.

A bit of heat, effort and care and they come off easily enough.

I think there was one in a scrap yard where I got a door off an mv6. Wrexham.  It was about 3 years ago now.

To add to this, were a suitably priced boot lid with a spoiler be available to purchase, then I would happily oblige in the removal of said spoiler and getting it packed for shipping.

Unfortunately the only ones that have I have found are still firmly attached to cars, and the cheapest is currently £300. In Devon... With no MoT...

The last one I attempted to remove from a knackered boot lid was a right bast**d. It was the adhesive similar to Tiger Seal or Sikaflex holding it on that was the main obstacle. Not sure if the originals were actually held on with strong double sided panel tape or a flexible adhesive....

Flexible adhesive. Aftermarket were supplied with a 3M product, both Prodrive for the MV6/Elite and Irmscher ;)

It takes about 10 minutes to remove one from a bootlid with a wallpaper scraper. Just carefully tap it around the edge of the spoiler with a hammer to cut through the sealant. Ive done loads of them. ;)

Tigerseal or Sikaflex are extremely good for bonding, but trying to remove something stuck with either is difficult as they are very tough when cured. It's probably unnecessarily strong for a rear spoiler. If a more universal adhesive sealant is used that is fractionally more flexible, then I think it would be far easier to cut through it with a wallpaper scraper.

I believe they are stuck on with Sikaflex from the factory. All the ones Ive removed in approx. 10 minutes with a scraper and hammer were factory fitted.
I used to break Omegas for parts and always had a good demand for spoilers if I was willing to separate them from the bootlid.  ;)

I have got a Prodrive bootlid spoiler in green off the 3.2 Elite that I broke last month.  If you pm me an address I'll get a you postage quote, I think that might be the stumbling block for you.
It won't be cheap, as it might be needed for another green car... ;)

Tuffnells and TNT provide low cost 'over length' parcel delivery. I book them through Interparcel which then gives you the delivery options available. I have sent classic car steel bumper sections with them for less than £20 which are far heavier than a spoiler, so you may be pleasantly surprised.

Shipping that internationally would be best done wrapped in bubblewrap inside a plastic pipe.

My son is a carpet fitter, so I use the cardboard tube used to strengthen rolled carpets are ideal for this purpose. They are discarded daily, and are various diameters, very strong, lightweight, easy to cut to the required length but most importantly cheap....

The best quote we've had so far for the rear spoiler to be sent to New Zealand is £384.35 via UPS Express Saver and it will take 2 weeks!  I'd like some money for the spoiler itself as well, so I realise that will make it very expensive.  I will research Parcelforce and Interparcel now too.

Seems a little high...... ??? :-\
Being currently away and not having seen an Omega for 3 weeks,  I can only guess at the dimensions of the spoiler,  and of a parcel with a wrapped spoiler.....
So assuming the following dimensions -
- 4 kg, 120cm x 20cm x 20cm (tube), the price I came up with is approx £120 with UPS Express delivery to New Zealand estimated on the 28th of Sept....
- 4kg, 140cm x 25cm x 25cm (tube) - £159 with delivery on 28th Sept.
- 4kg, 100cm x 20cm x 20cm (tube) - £56 with delivery on 28th September....
- 5 kg, 130cm x 25cm x 25cm (tube) - £153 delivery as above.
It's the length over 1m that puts the price up (obviously ::))
If I am wildly out with my estimated dimensions and weight, post them and I can try another quote....
But these various prices are food for thought....

Sorry mate, I completely missed this reply!!

That is quite expensive but not impossible, did you get a chance to see if parcel force and interparcel would be any cheaper?

No drama If not though!!

I'm working on again it today, I'm pretty sure we used Interparcel to get that quote.  It does make it a very expensive spoiler.  That price was just the postage and I've been offered £100 for the spoiler itself over here.  And I've got to factor in if I want to keep it as a spare myself if they are that hard to come by.  If you know someone who is travelling back, then they could hand carry for less,  but obviously Covid-19 makes that difficult if NZ is still not letting anyone in.

Thanks for pointing that out, and I am still trying to get the best price in response to his part wanted request. Although I hadn't actually advertised it as for sale.
If it is too complicated or he doesn't want it at my best price, then I'll keep it. Actually ebay's global shipping programme might be the cheapest route to NZ.
I am well aware of (and have benefitted from) this forum's aims to keep as many Omegas on the road at the minimum cost to all involved. :)

Weight 2 kgs,  dimensions if enclosed in bubblewrap and cardboard to protect it.  135cm x 25cm x 20cm.  We got our quote through Interparcel, and I'll sell you the spoiler for £100 + carriage costs.  We've had problems with sending stuff from work to Japan, and getting claims for loss or damage from Interparcel has been very difficult. Parcelforce might be cheaper, but we've had trouble with them also in the past.  If we put the value of the goods as £100 for example, that's what we'll get back in compensation, if we put £500, the cost goes up considerably.  This is why I'm reluctant to send this out, because we may both end up out of pocket.  The best solution is hand carry by a friend, and even then you'll get excess baggage for your oversized boomerang!!

With the dimensions and weight quoted above, UPS Express Saver is the cheapest at £139.80, collection tomorrow with £100 insurance cover, and estimated delivery 5th - 7th October to New Zealand. Parcel Force are far more expensive - by just short of £30.
In my experience the service given by UPS is far better than Parcel Force.

The bubblewrap and cardboard does make if larger, and costing is done on volumetric weight.  However, having had to twice send a Carlton fuel tank to Japan, which was encased in a triple layer cardboard box with 6mm plywood reinforcement top and bottom, which was damaged both times, perhaps I am being a bit over cautious now.

Bubblewrap in a length of soilpipe. Should be pretty much courier proof.

Volumetric weight is industry standard.

UPS or FedEx would be my first choices...

Bubblewrap and cardboard less so :-\

FedEx aren't coming up as options through Interparcel.....
I'm not selling the spoiler and it's none of my business (or anyone else's really), but if I was serious about selling one, I would have contacted the OP by PM, then negotiated the costs including purchase price privately. But as it is out in the open - £100 purchase price (or whatever figure you really want) with £150 P&P , and Bob's yer Uncle - all sorted.
But if there is a degree of reluctance to sell the spoiler, then keep it....
It all seems to be getting over complicated imho...
