Title: 20 mph speed limits
Post by: Auto Addict on 15 June 2023, 18:09:22
Surely they're going to encourage drivers to concentrate on their speedometer rather than the road.

Just a thought.

They are just plain stupid.

I work regularly in London and have no choice but to drive from site to site due to my job (Public transport not an option), it's made the roads more dangerous for everyone in my opinion, the drivers and pedestrians are frustrated and more risks are taken. Just like ULEZ and Smart Motorways, the Country has gone mad!

all the roads on my estate are 20mph ..... no one takes a blind bit of notice, despite the speed humps.

Thing is it's loads of roads and key routes in London, you know, the place where there's a camera every few metres to charge the motorist for one thing or another...

20mph limits are spreading like a plague, particularly in Wales where soon it will be quicker to get around on a sheep!  :o  :P ;D

I only drive at 20mph on our estate due to the amount of kids and to be ready for the racing 4 x 4 mums who have not one bit of care for anyone or anything else in their pursit to get rid of the kids and sit in the gym drinking coffee

There was a consultation to make our estate 20mph.

As I pointed out, at the minute it's 30mph, and as most people drive around at anything between 40 - 60 mph, spending a fortune putting up 20mph signs won't make a blind bit of difference.

I did find out on my patronisation course, many aren't 20mph limits but 20mph zones.  The latter are not enforceable.

All points above are valid, but you can't debate this with the average middle class Oxford woman, who wants to be a do-gooder because she has nothing else to do and feels its a worthy cause.  Hence, round these parts, we have very few NSL roads, as they have all been dropped to 50, or even 40mph.

I'm just grateful I'm still allowed to use the roads, given how close I am to the land of the LTNs.

Sort of like me staring at my MPG reading in the 3.2!

That may well be a different issue. I read an article explaining that NSL roads have different  (better) standards of maintenance applied to them. So, if the local authority has spaffed its budget on diversity officers and organic lentils for the staff canteen,  they can lower the speed limit under the guise of safety rather than actually pay to maintain it properly.

The few main roads (were NSL, now 50) around here that are being resurfaced are done with one layer of bitumen topped with gravel straight of the wagon. No planing first. Then 20mph restriction until all of the spare gravel ends up in the gutter, quick white line and that's it. Reminds me of the way they used to do it when I was a lad, just a quick, cheap job.
As Jim says, reduce the speed limit and you can get away with this crap.

I remember playing football on newly laid streets, if you went over you got a palm full of gravel for nursing to remove with her tweezers  ;D

Did anyone see the Morning Live programme on BBC1 this morning? Mostly PC bollacks, but there was a piece on using waste plastic mixed with normal bitumen to repair potholes. They are trialling this in Cumbria at the moment and they claim that the new mix lasts 6/7 times longer than the normal stuff.

Nope, it is just being that near to Oxfordshire, and the complete, insane desire to stop all car usage...   ...then cry when all businesses move out....
