I'd never thought about oven chips until recently and usually just grabbed the cheapest supermarket own brand, until I ran out and bought a bag of McCains from a Spar shop.  Expensive, but far and away better than the own brands I usually buy. 

I'm currently wading through a big bag from The Hearty Food Company which cost 90p in Tesco.  Not bad, but a bit greasy.   

The same size bag of McCains oven chips were somewhere between £2 -£3!    When the chips were down, I couldn't bring myself to splash out....   

So what are your favourite oven chips?

That's exactly what happened to some of my Mums family about 20 years ago. Son came home late from the pub. Put the chip pan on and sat down to watch TV while it heated up,then fell asleep. His parents, sister and sisters baby were all upstairs in bed.
The firemen found the four bodies huddled together in the corner of a bedroom, presumably to try and escape the smoke and hope someone would rescue them.
They had no chance of getting down the stairs, and the upstairs windows were all long thin slits that a person couldn't possibly climb through.
I believe the son ended up on the funny farm because he couldn't live with the guilt. Whoever designed the houses probably didn't lose a wink of sleep though.

On a more cheerful note. Oven chips are universally shite. The ones swmbo cooks in the frying pan cooked in oil are lovely, but not quite as nice as the ones my old Mum used to cook in lard. Her and my Dad had many heart attacks between them though, and the lard was probably a contributory factor.

That's truly awful. When you think about the difference in the way we live now to only, say, 60 years ago, it's like a different world. To the very young of today, we are history.

My Friends  granny used to cook them on an open coal fire in a saucepan full of lard then served them up to us in newspaper they were the best. Could have been the printers ink

The house in question was quite modern. Built in the late 60,s iirc. Bloody scandalous to put that design of windows in a house then.
The Father of the family who was killed in the fire had to be the unluckiest bloke alive. When he was younger he worked in Belfast shipyard. He was walking across the deck of a partially built ship in the dar, and someone had forgotten to put a plate over a hole in the deck. He fell down it and fell 70 feet, his arms and legs catching on the girders etc. on the way down. His arms and legs were an awful mess and he never worked again. Then about 20 years later, he died in the fire.
As my old Mum used to say, when your feeling down, remember theres always someone worse off than yourself.

Christmas 1983 we locked the door of our married quarter & drove home for Christmas. When we opened the door 10 days later, the first thing we could smell was chip pan oil ..... we'd left the electric deep fat fryer on for 10 days!!!  Fortunately it was on the lowest setting but none the less we shudder to think what could have happened over Christmas while we were away!

About 30 years ago I put a chicken breast in the oven, on the lowest temperature, and went for a pint. It turned into a three day bender and, when I got home, I could, of course, smell chicken. Shit! I went to the oven, no smoke, opened up and it was almost perfect. A bit dry but went down well with a buttie and a cup of tea.

if you cook them in the oven ,save yourself some cash........

Any chip is bland, it's a piece of potato. Salt, vinegar, hp sauce or ketchup are the answer to that.

She cooks them in an Actifry which no additional oil, and I do have to concede, far better than doing them in the oven as they get more evenly cooked.

The government  message for healthy eating is always being reviewed. Ten years from now you may find that 20 Capstan full strength should be one of your five a day.

They can't do a real chip IMHO.

What they can do is a perfectly cooked oven chip.  And for that reason, we like ours.

Personally, I prefer a fried chip, but they are messy, horrible things that stink the house for days.  Hence, the dear lord invented chip shops!

My Mum too. She lived on fried food. She had her first heart attack in her 40,s and died when she was 68 though.

Fresh peeled main crop potatoes & then at least double fried in a vegetable oil deep fat fryer with the half cooked potatoes rested for 10 minutes, crisper & better flavoured. Triple cooking them makes them even crisper which is what several top steak restaurants like Gauchos do.

Talking of which, I went to Quaglino's jazz restaurant last Friday & had a very good 300g fillet steak & great evening, which was unfortunately cut short by the South Western Train's strike as the last train home was the 10:42pm from Waterloo. Fortunately, I got on the train just after it pulled into the station as when it left all 12 carriages were packed full, including all standing areas.

10.75oz which is a proper sized steak, especially for fillet where it is a fat free very dense meat. Biggest steak I've ever had is a 40oz T-Bone in Las Vegas, delivered on a large plate & about 1" thich, which was inevitably delivered with a bucket of fries and a large platter of sides. I just concentrated on the steak, which I finished, with 80% of the rest left. That was before I hit over 40 where appetite shrank, but waist gradually expanded & weight went over my ideal 20-40yo 22.5 BMI!

Fillet steak has a taste similar to liver.

Prefer a T-Bone.
