Are you getting any noise from the hydraulic tappets which might indicate a lack of oil pressure?

Could be the pressure switch, I guess, but best to assume it's got a problem, and a potentially life-threatening one at that.

Can you get a gauge on it to measure the actual oil pressure?

If it's low at idle and picks up at higher revs I would check the pressure relief valve for signs that it could be sticking open.

Tired oil pump or a stuck pressure release valve.....the latter being an easy one to check, the former requires an oil pressure gauge.

I would check for burrs on the pressure relief valve plunger and bore. Maybe it's sticking due to an imperfection in the surfaces which could be polished away.

As for flushing, the problem is that any solids that you do dislodge by flushing will find their way into the pump and relief valve and could potentially make the problem worse. If you suspect sludge I would be inclined to remove the lower sump, make sure the oil pickup is clear and clean out the sump as far as possible with paraffin or similar and then keep oil changes regular for a while to ensure the oil is clean.

I wonder if you could at least get to the strainer by just removing the lower half of the sump? I think that can be done with engine in-situ?

Maybe that's all the access you'd need to at least assess if you've got a problem with muck in there. Don't know. I've never been in there myself. Ronnie would know, as he's investigated a few low oil pressure issues recently.

Might also be worth getting a new spring and plunger for the relief valve, and feeling in the bore for any unevenness. A scotchpad or similar could be used to gently remove any small burrs.

the plunger and piston seem ok

all depends on where the oil pick up is if at front of sump might be able to get it out fingers crossed

any body know where abouts the pick up is front or rear
any pic would be helpfull
