Vauxhall Detachable Tow Bar Bracket
« on: 02 May 2012, 18:54:07 »

Hi, i have a 51 plate omega estate and bought a dealer direct detachable tow bar second hand from that certain auction place!

Finally got around to fitting it after lots of wire brushing, cleaning and repainting and noticed that after i tightened all the new bolts (stainless steel) the tow bar was bending the bottom of the bumper.

Have i got the brackets that go under the car between the tow bar and beams the wrong way around?

I put the brackets u side up so that they wrap around the beam and the plate / brackets fits back to back to the bumper.

Should they be turned the other way round so they are n side up so the bracket and beams are back to back as this would give me a little more depth and would possible miss the bumper.

Or do i just cut the bumper around the towbar?

Any help or comments would be appreciated

Paul

My bumper is bent as well with the tow bar. Just bolted it all in place with the bumper bent underneath, didn't fancy cutting it and making a mess of it..

I'd be surprised if your bumper didn't require some sort of cut, my MFL saloon had a preformed  cut at the lower edge that just required 1/8" cut either side of a flap that I've just folded up out of the way.

Stainless fasteners are NOT a good idea, they're too soft. You need high tensile bolts.

I know on the pre facelift, they is a couple of score lines in the underside of the bumper which you cut and then bend it up and back.

typically they need a bumper cut to fit

make sure you also remove any mastic in the boot between the mounting plate and the floor - if not the bar will come loose

Thanks for all your replies, i think i will leave it as is, me and cutting straight lines do not mix!!!

As for the stainless steel bolts, i thought i was being clever as the ones that were fitted needed to be cut off with an angle grinder!

 .....

If it's like my saloon, you're only cutting aboout 1/8" on either side of the flap, then there's a 'scored' line that you fold along.  :-\
