Temp gauge not working at all, but heater OK. What shall I look at first?

Bullet connector on coolant bridge is the first check.

OK, full story on this now. I have just bought this car, and now have it home. He has had the temp sender replaced and still no gauge.
But, when driving it, the gauge occasionally comes up to about 80, stays there a little while and drops down to nothing again. Everything else seems to be OK.
Lazy thermostat???

Put the palm of your hand on the rev counter, and press firmly. With luck, you may feel the entire cluster move back slightly. If so, it is probably just the cluster wasn't fully seated.

It sounds like the 'stat to me.
To test your gauge, remove the single blue wire that goes to the gauge sender unit (the ECU's temp sender unit is next to it) and ground it. Your gauge should go to fully hot. :y :y

Ah, hang on, does gauge gently creep up to 80C, then gently drop. Or is is sudden?
If gentle, if you leave it idling on driveway for 20 mins, does it creep up higher? If so, stat.
If its sudden, try the cluster trick I mentioned.

While you are "trying it" .. start from cold and stand with your hand on the large pipe that goes from the thermostat to the top of the radiator. That pipe should stay cold and suddenly get a surge of hot water as the thermostat opens after about 5-10 minutes at idle. If it very slowly and continuously warms up all the time then the thermostat is either stuck open or missing completely.
