Port polishing/ Gas Flowing????
« on: 13 October 2006, 18:26:55 »

As per the tittle im in 2 minds to have it done. The car will be coming off the road next year for a load of changes, ill be doing the cam belt etc so i was wandering if its worth going the whole hog and whipping the heads off for skimming, port polishing and gas flowin.

Also peace of mind of having the head gaskets replaced is pushing me to do it.

I have 99% of the tools for the job, bar a torque wrench. Ill be buying one of these anyways.

Any input would be greatfully appreciated

Ports look quite good as standard, but exhaust manifold is awfull!!
There isnt much space around the passenger side manifold which limits what you could do but the manifold design has to be the thing that limits performance so first thing to attack.

ort polish is one thing...but i wouldnt skim for the sake of skimming - your limited on the mount of times heads can be skimmed and using one life when its not necessary.... :-/ i wouldnt .....

Ok i wont bother with the skimming then, thanks for that  :).

As said earlier about the manifold, I have a pair of sports cats to fit too so maybe i could find a manifold to match them

There is always margin for improvement on cylinder heads due to the fact that they are cast parts and the manufacturere never bothers perfecting them as he would be bankrupted to do so. If you have the knowledge to do it do it if not leave it as is. Skimming is not a good idea as you don't want to raise the compression even further as the engine will detonate 10.7:1 is pretty high as stadard. Regarding the manifolds i wouldn't really bother unless i aim at really high power output, you would need though to tune them with respect to the intake runner geometry to take full advantage of pressure waves. I think that a good remap and inlet cams with a litle more duration(late intake valve closeing) would be good enough for 230+ bhp. Be carefull whatever to do not to ruin your car.
