To my mind the 'stick on' look comes from having the metal of the bonnet visible around the edges, but if that's the case how has BMW's kidney grill survived for so long?

marketing.
The latest BMWs have gone way too far with that grille.

I think all Beemer styling has become a bit hate or love in the last 10-15 years.  I guess BMW fans will think its gorgeous, but others will think its pretty ugly.

I think the Irmscher grill with a charcoal or body colour frame suits the facelift as the original grill is the only chome on the car and looks tacky for it.

Been a while since I added any posts to this thread, car has had an easier life since the 530D appeared on the drive a couple of years ago but does still get used for local trips and the odd run out to blow the cobwebs away.

As per the recent wanted add, I had to obtain a second hand rear screen as Autoglass etc apparently couldn't obtain one from any supplier :( I guess these type of parts sourcing problems are to be expected on a car of this age and while I have a shed full of spares I never thought to cut the rear screen out of the last Omega I scrapped!  ;D
