This test can be affected by modern antifreeze, giving "false positives". Does the car have other head gasket symptoms?

Traditional head gasket failures where combustion products get into the coolant are rare on this engine.

Agreed with Kevin - are there any other symptoms?

Seems a bit premature to be considering warranty claims  :y

there is milkyness on the oil filler neck but i know that is common with these too the tempture gauge does not work and has not since the car was brought . i agree about the warranty but is runs out of warranty soon and i dont want to get stuck with the bill for doing the head gasgets . the car had had a oil cooler replaced and when i first looked at the car the header tank had oil in it apparently left from the cooler was changed . i have no reason to doubt the dealer at all with this.

None of these things point to HG

Oil in filler neck is common and not a sign of HG failure

Temp gauge not working - check the spade connector in the valley! Also not a HG symptom.

There is nothing to suggest HG failure, yet...

The sniffer could be picking up remnants of the oil from the cooler failuer.

Mine had that (not milky, but DOUBLE CREAM) and I nearly died when James showed it me , as I INCORRECTLY thought it was a HG problem.
But I was assured by the Master this was NOT the case, and I got no DOUBLE CREAM there now

I dont remember advising that.....

Anyway, if its had an oil cooler failure then the system will still haev oil in....when hot, this will trigger a hydrocarbon test

The first thing I'd do is see if the sender wire is connected for the temp gauge.

Compression test will only show failures in fire rings - almost unheard of on V6, so won't achieve a lot - especially if it's already running on all 6...

No need to shout .... maybe this thread should await some input from Mr Tunnie Himself.... I'm sure we'd all love to hear his views on your fluids being replenished  ;D

Compression test will only show failures in fire rings - almost unheard of on V6, so won't achieve a lot - especially if it's already running on all 6...

And, assuming its the 2.6.....it has a metal multilayer headgasket arrangement so its even less likely to suffer fire ring failure.

As said, get the temp gauge sorted (probably not connected after the oil cooler change) and go from there.
