Effing brilliant job on the car guys.
Dave, I am going to up my sponsorship by 50%. Droplinks cost £6.58 each +Vat. I makle that about £15, so sling £15 in the tank instead of paying me that!
Seriously guys, have a very safe one and PLEASE drive carefully. Look after that hideous looking wreck and tell him to drink less when he is driving the next day! ;D
It goes without say, but GOOD LUCK to both of you.
-
Good luck to the pair of you, and be safe :)
Paypal sent as promised.

Car looks really good.
Decals are tops. Well, apart from the England flag. ::)
Just kidding, bit of Scottish banter there. ;)
Seriously though, enjoy yourselves, and don't do anything we wouldn't do, which should leave your options open to pretty much everything. ;D

UPDATE: .....by RMB in other thread
18:20, Mark and Dave phoned and have reached Dover only to be delayed by a missing ferry. They should be in Calais this evening still, so leg one completed.
:o Missed the ferry....hope the Senny didnt break down on route :(

Tsk, Yee of little faith!! [smiley=rolleyes.gif]
The Senny will be running like clockwork...
It was the Ferry that broke down on the way to pick them up of course. I believe it was the crankshaft sensor. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I hope they weren't in the bunch of teams that were turned away from the Formule1 hotel in Coquelles!!
I've changed my reservation to another hotel following a warning.

Probably best PM'ing Ronnie, as he is more likely to see them before I ever will.
-
I just realised what these guys are up to and i have to say WAW. How the hell i didn't figure it out before? Anyway, i think this is one of the best ways to spend your holidays and after having a look at the teams and their cars i have a feeling that mark and Dave with the mighty Senny will k*** some a**. I hope they have a snooper with them so that they don't pay speeding fines on the way like me. Breakdown??? well i don't think that this can happen to these people!!! Wish them an enjoyable trip!!

I've lost the web site address, anyone know what it is?

Nope, dunno if Ronnie has yet....
-
Anyone heard from the boy's yet?
Stopped off at one of those Hypermarkets on the other side of the channel? ;D
-
No updates from them yet :'(
I hope no news is good news :)
-
They'll be fine of course it'll be good news :-/
-
Probably having a cambelt party somewhere. ;D
-
If the Sennie breaks down, I could just imagine those 2 stripping the car down and changing the timing chain by the side of the road....
-
Quote from RMB...Just spoke with Dave and Mark. They are both well and making good progress. Currently approaching Innsbruk (Austria) and the Senator is running like a ....... senator.
They will be trying to get web access tonight (Sunday) so I will let them tell you the latest then.
.................................
Good to get some news

Good job they were in a Senator then and not a bloody Omega! :o
At least they'll have room to carry spares in the BIG Senator boot!!

Oh I see!!! You mean if they took an Omega they'd need more spares!!!

No it's not! It's not as deep/long - I have some 'deck chairs' that fitted long wise in the Senator's boot, they don't even come close to fitting in the Omega's boot in a similar fashion. The Bose amp takes up height ie suitcases that stood up in the Senator now have to be laid flat.
Why did the Po Lis buy up the remaining Senators? Cos they couldn't get their gear into an Omega
Oh I see!!! You mean if they took an Omega they'd need more spares!!!

'If the Sennie breaks down'? why they'll do it even if it doesn't break down, like when they have a 15 minute rest break.... ;D
-
I wonder how many times they have changed the oil....done the plugs/filters etc on route ;D
-
just had a look on the website ... hope the brakes work well, today should be an easy time for them after yesterday !!
-
Better late than never...
GOOD LUCK GUYS!! :)
-
Well done Mark and Dave :)
Look forward to seeing the pics and writeup once you are back :)
-
Well done on completing the rally, looking forward to the pics upon your return :D
-
Well done guys.. Now all you've got to do is drive back again!!

Job well done Dave and Mark, bet it was good fun too. [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

Well done lads, look forward to you being back on the forum.

Well done peeps on completing your trip [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

Well I'm blowed!!
It seems Dave and Mark have been quite the 'good samaritans' on their trip.
I've been getting dribs and drabs of info as all the teams return to the UK and start updating the CRX forum on the StreetSafari website and here's what they've been up to.....................(Bear in mind this is all third hand, so may not be entirely accurate!!)
Apparently they were sharing batteries with a team in a Mondeo whose alternator threw its toys out its pram, so they were changing batteries every hour with them throughout the trip, and this takes the biscuit................
The turbocharger on a Volvo being used by one of the teams disintgrated on one of the passes and somehow burst a brake pipe or two!!! (Might've been the other way round!), Dave and Mark cobbled it all back together using nothing more than chemical metal and Stella Artois cans!!!!
Good work fella's!!! ;)
-
I've just noticed Mark on here, so...
Congratulations Mark and Dave on your epic adventure :D

If you're back, then a big welcome back and well done Mark and Dave.

Welcome back Mark and Dave :D good to see you back online.
-
Well we are back....
6 countries, 2600 miles, way to much money the frogs for tolls, loadsa of beer consumed and a great time had by all.
Day 0, Laiback66 collects me from Woking station as I have cut my family holiday short to go and we head to Dover where the ferry has a 2 hour delay, finaly get to calais and into the bar to sign in. Then a beer later and we are off to the hotel which we cant find and get lost in road works around Calais.
Day 1, the start. 600 odd mile journey through France to Annecy, 10 hours driving, no problems and the Senator is running well until.....I rag it up a mountain and as we pull up it boils over! So, the Viscous coupling on the fan is shafted and its not going round. So get a hack saw out, saw out the aircon condenser to improve airflow, hard wire the aircon cooling fan up and problem solved...... It then get seven more interestin, were having a few beers when somebody says 'look at this turbo'. Outside there is a Turbo on a Volvo estate which is glowing red and I mean red. Then it gets better, having pressed the brake pedal there is a ball of fire as brake fluid squirts all over the manifold and lights!
The brake fluid was coming from the brake balance valve where there was a drilling on the side, the seal had melted!. As a temp measure a coin was epoxied to it (take plenty of 1 hour epoxy Rod!) and I bled all the brakes (good job because despite the full Volvo service history it had clearly never been done!) and they head off down the mountain using the handbrake and gears! Its now 1.00 in the morning.
Day 2 second leg to Bornio. head off down the mountain to the meeting point and get slightly lost on the way but make ift with time to spare. Find the Volvo boys and are pleased to see they didn't end up as a firey ball in the woods. Its not good though, here is no way the fix will hold or be safe and the turbo is still glowing red.
So, I removed the balance valve and scrounged two bots which fitted the drilling, cut the end off one bolt and added some additional cuts across the threads to create a tap. Used this to tap the drilling (it was only 3 mm deep so it wasn't easy) bunged a load of the green goo in it (as used on the V6 front cam bearings), a dab of thread lock for the threads and wound the bolt in until the green goo was oozing from the threads then added some additional black sealent (as used on the cam covers). Re-fitted, bled and checked the brakes and all is good again. The addition of a stella can helped as a heat shield to.]
Now to the turbo, it turns out the MAF sensor is goosed so its running lean and getting dam hot, so unplug the MAF in the hope that it runs on a default map, it does and on we go having abandoned a Granada with major fuel pump problems.
We take an alternative route via the Monte Blanc tunnel to try to make up time.
30 Miles away from the finish and we meet a home made 3 wheeler that one the Chezks has made and tow that to the finish so he can fix it for the morning.
We arrive there to find a very clapped out Mondeo estate with a knackered alternator.
Day 3 the third leg to Salzburg via Stelvio Pass. So, first off, put our battery on the Mondeo and there falt one on ours, jump start ours adn off we go. It starts with a Police escort and send off by the Major through the streets of Bormio whilst waving to our admiring fans. ;).
Then up Stelvio with Laidback driving, 3/4 of the way up a quick drivers swap and I have a go......the last leg was a bit quick and we got past 5 other cars before stopping at the top. BATTERY CHANGE......
A quick stop at the top to get a hotdog served by a guy who looked like Zak Dingle and swore a lot with a building behind which had Graffitti saying 'Nepal' hence the nick name of 'Zak Dingles Nepolise Hotdog stand'
Down the pass with only a few problems, one where I nearly killed motor cyclist who was on the wrong side of the road and the next where the Volvo cooked its brakes. We also passed one of teh teams in a BMW who had been hit by a lunatic biker and smahed his alloy (the bikers where dam right dangerous!), the biker was just about ok but his bike wouldn't run and he had to free wheel it down the mountain. Another guy we passed wasn't so lucky an was awaiting an ambulance.
A bit further down and The Mk1 Carlton has also cooked his brakes and boiled the wheel bearing grease.
So, on to the border and another battery change, keep going a biut more and yes, you guessed it....another battery change.
After another 3 battery changes we are approaching Salzburg and arrive at the Hostel. Meet up for the eveing, plenty of beer and get ready for the final push to Prague.....
.....will post some more later....
-
Sounds like you guys had alot of fun. :)
-
All I can say is-
WOW!
FANTASTIC!
WELL DONE YOU GUYS
-
VERY BIG WELL DONE SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAD A LOT OF FUN BIG WELL DONE
-
Mark and Dave. Fantastic. well done.
Not only did you make it, but, as always, were there for others, giving your expertise and experience freely.
Our newly appointed Omega God will bless you and reward you both in his own magnanimous way.
-
Sounds like you both had a brilliant time from what you have wrote so far, look forward to the next great instalment. :)
-
I will add to this and post more pics in due course (ie. when I am less tired!)
In the meantime....
This is what happens when you rally a Senator up a mountain!!
We pulled up at the top and noticed something was amiss... ::)
Then the bonnet was opened... ;D

LB, I know that feeling - my project car kept doing that. Same colour as your sennie as well...
-
Well done Mark and Dave [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
You have achieved loads :) and helped others on your trip :)
I hope the aircon didnt work b4 Mark hacksawed out the condensor......otherwise that would have of been a big decision.....nice cool car or overheating car ;D
-
The aircon was well goosed....no gas at all in it.
It was the viscous fan coupling that had failed and hence the rad had no fan cooling....until the aircon fan was wired up.....I hate bloody viscous couplings!
I suspect it would have boiled up anyway.....
-
Sounds like some adventure, well done & congratulations
-
Welcome back you pair & well done!!
I must admit, my heart was warmed by hearing of your benevolence on the trip!!
I'm looking forward to seeing more of the pic's!!
So where did you get the Omegaowners window sticker then? And more to the point, could I have one? 8-)
Did you manage to remove the vignette from your windscreen or should I start looking on eBay? I see there's quite a few for sale!!
Cheers,
Rod.
-
The swiss Vignette is available and off the screen with no problems.
So, day 4....the drive to Prague. Now this is a fair treck and given the further required battery swaps etc we decide to head up to Munich and take the Autobahns over to the Chezk border. This gave us a chance to wind the Senator up but, at 145mph a dam Golf driver pulled out so we had to brake.....
As we approached the border and hearing rumours of some cars being refused entry we decided to take a 15 minute break and check the cars over.....plus change the battery again.
Whilst doing this, 3 of the scruffiest Germans came over and showed us customs ID and asked for all the documentation etc. The problem was the guy with the Volvo had not registered the car in his name as he had only bought it a few days before the trip!. This he managed to explain to them whilst adjusting speking in what can only be descirbed as a Rennay from Allo Allo type accent.
No problems at the border and onto Prague....witha few more battery changes.
Now Prague has got the worst one way system ever and we did get pretty lost......just as we passed the restaurant where we were meeting later, the Mondeo died again and we had not got enough charge to even think of doing another swap so there is sat.
Met up later on and watched with delight as the Mondeo got taken to the crusher althought the pickup driver did manage to bang it into a Volve estate whilst he was loading it!
Up next morning for the 700 mile drive back to Calais.....
-
I have to say that having driven the Omega this morining that it is an order of magnitude better as a car than the Senator......quieter, better power delivery, smoother, nicer ride.......no bloody viscous fan....
-

See! That's what I keep telling everyone on the ABS forum, but they've either had bad experience with an Omega and didn't believe me or just plain didn't believe me!!! ::)
-
They cant have done a very good comparison then.......200+ miles in a Senator and then back to an Omega and you soon realise!
And reliability.....viscous fans not working, cruise not working (although ours did), blower speed control not working, knocking drop links, worn wishbone bushes, iffy brakes, non-working suspension etc etc etc.....how can the Omega be worse....it just sounds the same to me!
-

I take it the senny was never MOT'd then ;D
-
Yep....and still has 10 months left....I am quite piccy though. The brakes would pass an MOT but, needed a real good look at.

Blimey what with the dodgy droplinks and worn wishbone bushes I thought it surely wouldn't pass :o
-
I'm fairly sure droplinks aren't a fail, because even though they're checked, when they're checked they're under tension and therefore don't have play!!

I still recon it was a damn complicated way of getting the engine bay steam cleaned.
Mark, can I give you £100 for your estate and have a go next year?
-
;D ;D
Actually the electronic ride control still works fine! ;)
All in all, the Senator is damn good car. It needs a bit of work, but it is very sound and, when asked wil haul you along at a heck of a rate (including round country lanes!) :)

Hence the reason that although I love my Omega and IMO it is a better car, I'm going to have a Senator as a plaything once I come back from Italy!!! ;)

The majority of that lot's already on my list. The problem's going to come when trying to figure outr what tools to take and which to leave behind, 'cos I'll bet the law of Sod will be in full effect!!!!
Oh! And WTF's self amalgimating tape??? :-?
-
Its tape that sticks to itself creatinga jointless bond....its very water proof and that with a jubilee clip or two and Stella can will fix a split hose.
Tools.
Sockets - Selection
Spanners - Selection
Screw drivers
Wire cutters
Hammer
Length of pipe (for brake fluid change or similar)
Water pump pliers
Jump leads
Tow rope/pole
Jack (Optional)
Axle stands (Optional)
Maybe a few crimps and crimp tool.

Now i feel very irresponsible that i have driven 3 times from UK to Greece without even carrying a screwdriver the first time with a car that had the same cambelt for 65k miles.
I would add to your list a full set of sensors.
-
I'd add a gas or 12v soldering iron
-
I would add to your list a full set of sensors.
Well, It's had more or less a full set of new sensors since I bought it, and seeing as how there's nothing wrong with the old ones, I'll be taking them!!
-
I'd add a gas or 12v soldering iron
I lost my gas one, so I bought a new 240v one, but we're using an inverter, so running it's not going to be a problem. ;)

Ow yes....
...get a CEPT based CB radio and aerial......the radios provided are useless, they are supposed to have a 3Km range but in reality they barely manage 500m given that they are transmitting and receiving from a tin box.
And the comment on the forum about SWR is wrong, set it once and forget it......

What's 'CEPT based' Mark?
-
CEPT rig bought from eBay!
I'll have so much stuff to sell when I get back! ::)
-
CEPT is the europeon frquency setup.....UK40 is the old Uk one......you wont get any trouble with the euro plod using CEPT.
As for border Police....you wont see any on the route you are going!
Mag mount and good whip aerial also required.

Thanks for that Mark, I'd googled in and found out anyway. The niggle is though that the rig I've bought turns out to be a modified UK spec one to give 'mid-band' ant the flick of a switch. hope that'll be ok.
Mag mount and good whip aerial also required.
Already purchased!! Might have to borrow a SWR meter, but I'm damned if I can see any way of adjusting it on the ariel.
-
The aerial is usualy a whip which is inserted into a larger coil at the base......there is an allen key where the two meet, you slacken this and adjust the length of the aerial to setup the VSWR.
If you get stuck for a base unit I think I have a CEPT one some where.
-

Yeah, I remember from adjusting my DV27 way back when, but there doesn't seem to be that much travel in the whip part of the ariel TBH. D'ya reckon I might get away without fine tuning it? Years ago I used a whip ariel, never set the SWR and it seemed to work just fine.

Now ya tell me!! ;D

Have you seen this man??????????????????????????????????
