why does my 2.0 cd rev to high

hi all ree again as you know got rid of my 3.0 elite now got 2.0 cd auto .on a 99 plate had a long run other day done 180 miles , when i stuck it in neutral it revs to 2,000 / 3,000 revs then goes back to about 800 then just goes up and down between these revs ,dosent do it untill warmed up and then when putting it in gear goes in with a clunk as revs high apart from that lovely drive ,any ideas ?? Ree.

Sounds like an air leak, but could be some retard has buggered about with throttle butterfly

did find a hole in the mass air flow meter gaffer taped it up  ;D would that fix it put loads on ?? or does it need replaceing full stop, is my model to old to find codes, and can i upgrade at all if poss ? Ree.

was told may be some software on the gearbox that could be updated ??
