Wing Mirror Paint Problem
« on: 13 August 2010, 22:24:46 »

About 18 months ago i had a mishap with my driver side wing mirror which was solved with a replacement glass and back shell from vauxhall.
The shell came in unpainted form and hence i had to paint with the GM supplied paint and lacquer myself.
I followed ALL the guidelines regarding a clean item to paint, correct distance of can from object whilst spraying, and let each coat dry before applying the next.
When i was done the shell looked as good as showroom spec but now is showing signs of tardiness (white clouding in paint) and i'm not too sure why.

Any ideas or remedies????

Such a missed oppurtunity.
Look forward to the Cadillac ATS & ATS-V. Maybe a re-badged one will replace the Miggy as a RWD runner?

I'm by no means a paint expert, but wonder if it was lacquered?

White 'clouding' is usually caused by moisture, particularly in the metallic finishes. If it is a red colour paint then some do have problems with sunlight (UV) affecting it and I had a 406 that eventually had every panel a diffent shade and some were cloudy! Was it the correct compatible laquer?
Best as a bodyshop for a bit of free advice, most will give it if you say pleeeeeease  :y

Yep, I'd also suggest moisture in the air when spraying.

You need to spray again.

When was the last time you washed it and and gave it a polish and wax ??? It could be that your clear coat has failed or needs some t.l.c like a paint cleaner i know it sounds daft but have a look at this thread from the meguires on line forum and just have a read and see if you can find anything on there it mite help so you dont have to re-paint. Hope it helps mate. :y

If you have to re-paint try sanding it with 600 grit and if your paint is still good try and re-coat with the clear. Mite save having to go back and do it all. :-/
