I see from the DVLA site that the road tax for a 2.6 is now £270.00 for the year or £148.50 for 6 months, to drive on what are now some of the worst maintained roads in europe, strange how increases in road tax  are hiked without a mention.

Can't even call it road tax anymore seen as it's not spent on the roads. It's 'vehicle excise duty'. Mine's not due for another 6 months but going to have to start saving pretty damn soon!

I wonder if anything has been spent on some of our roads since then.

There's a bend on my commute where you have to choose your line carefully to find the bit of road that still has some tarmac on.

It does seem to have changed to an emissions tax..... less than 99g/K/Tons od CO2 per inch/mm/yard = "Road Tax" exempt. 

Suppose it would explain why its not spent on road upkeep!

Vehicle tax was introduced in the 1888 budget and the current system of excise duty applying specifically to motor vehicles was introduced in 1920. This excise duty was ring-fenced for road construction and was paid directly into a special Road Fund from 1920 until 1937 after which it was treated as general taxation.[3] Even during this period the majority of the cost of road building and improvement came from general and local taxation due to the tax being too low for the upkeep of the roads.[4]

what pees me off, is all these car that qualify for free/minimal VED due to low CO2 emissions *when new* - you cant tell me these same cars, that may have missed routine maintenance, been ragged to within an inch of their lives, etc, are putting out the same emmissions after 3-5 years! 

CO2 emissions aren't on the MOT from what I can see either, so there really needs to be something done to make the MOT and VED more relevant to each other - you cant base a cars VED on a particular emission, then never check it again!

I remember several years ago now when aerosols were blamed for the start of the" greenhouse effect", my wise old father in law (now deceased) said you watch this spiral now everyday items can be caused for pollution, boy was he right!!

CO2 emissions are just a measure of fuel efficiency of the vehicle.  It's not something you need to measure on an ongoing basis, because it is fairly simply related to the efficiency of the engine, and the mass of the vehicle.
Small efficient engine in a light car = not much fuel per mile travelled.  Not much fuel burnt = not much CO2 produced.
Not much fuel burnt by lickle cars means there's more left for Omegas.

Yes ,great the less they use we can use more driving proper cars and listening to that glorious V6 !! I might even take the longer route to work to get my extra tenners worth ,

Something isn't quite right there. I've just checked on the DVLA web site on my ('99) 3.0 and it's showing £121 for 6 months and £220 for the year.  It was £205 for the year, so that's a £15 increase which is less than 10%. I'm confused.

I think you'll find that it was £118 for 6months and £215 for 12 months,now £121 and £220 as you say

when does the VED increase come into effect?  I taxed my other half's DeLorean last Thursday (to start on 1st April) at DVLA, and it was £118 and some pennies, which is what I paid to tax my De last December.

My Omega is due at the end of April (PLG rate).

I taxed my 406 on 1/04 and it had already gone up to new rate,silly me,should have done it a day earlier

I seem to remember road tax being £25 for ANY car. I was just a nipper  when it was this inexpensive. I'm thinking mid to late sixties.

Its just cost £148.50 to tax my Alfa 1.8 for 6 months
