Omega General Help / Yet another A/C question...
« on: 21 May 2014, 12:08:54 »
Ok I'm going to attack my A/C this weekend - hopefully. So I need to order up some parts. I had the radiator pressure checked whilst changing the engine, and it checked out Ok. However, when I went to the A/C place for a re-fill it failed the vacuum test. So.. I'm going to order up...

13277003 HP Valve (which superceeds 52458177 ?)
52455752 Compressor pipework seals
3041827 Schrader valves.

I've got loads of HBNR O rings, various oils, UV dye, pressure pipes and gauges, and a cylinder of R134A ::) from when I retro-fitted did the LC with R134a.

However, I'm wondering about the dryer. Best practice is to replace when the system is depressurised for any length of time, and the A/C has not worked in all the time I've owned the car - 4 years. EPC seems to show the complete unit (52482791) or just the dessicant insert (52464426). I'll get the prices this lunchtime, but has anyone ever changed the dessicant? Easy/Hard/Impossible?

Omega General Help / Oil Pressure lost...
« on: 16 March 2014, 20:04:23 »
I think it probably is dead this time. C30XE Y reg Omega Elite Auto.

Driving up to the smoke on Saturday, comming of the M3 onto the M25 clockwise. As I was merging in I noticed the Red Oil Pressure lamp come on on the dash. This was accompanied by a loud tapping noise which was noticable over the heights of Agnetta and Frida at full blast so pulled over as soon as i could. The engine was running a bit lumpy and basically stalled as I stopped. The Amber oil level lamp was not on. Anyway, popped the bonnet and opened the oil filler cap. Seemed very hot and quite dry in there. Pulled the dipstick, but couldn't make out if there was an oil level on it.

I did have 5L of VX 15W40 with me, so I tipped in about 2L. Started the engine but the fuel pressure lamp stayed on, and it sounded very tappety. So I jumped to the conclusion of a serious problem thei the oil circuit - broken oil pump, of holed piston or bad head gasket leak. In an effort to get off the motorway I tipped in the rest of the oil started up and tried to drive on. The tapping was much much wors as I gently accelerated along the hard shoulder to regain a safe speed to rejoin the carrageway. The i looked in the rear view mirror. f*k me - a smoke trail the Red arrows would be proud of. So basically game over. Whilst waiting for recovery I looked under the car - oil was comming out of the back of the engine either focker covers, breathers or crankshaft oil seal. But it was also dripping from somewhere at the front of the engine on the off side.

I got the care recovered to a local Vauxhall Garage - Bedfont on the A30 near Heathrow. They're gonna do a quick inspection on Wednesday, but i've told them that unless it;s a simple fix It'll likely end up at the scrapyard. Whilst there today emptying out my stuff, I took a look at the dipstick, :o The oil level is now half way up the dipstick tube. Probably shouldn't have put all that oil in, and may explain the red arrows effect.

So - assuming it;s not just a faulty oil pressure switch - are there any common causes of oil pressure loss? The water is still clean and pink so I don't think it'll be oil cooler related.

Omega General Help / Back End Jobs...
« on: 30 November 2013, 20:02:30 »
I've got a couple of back end jobs I'm going to attack tomorrow. Any comments?

1) Fuel Filter - Why oh why oh why did the idiots at Russelheim think it was a good idea to use those quick (hah!) release clamps on the fuel lines.

2) Rear track rods. These are the later version and different to the Carlton/Senator ones that I'm used to. I assume it's just a loosen off the locking nuts (one of which is left hand thread), pray,  and heave on the center adjuster. I've cleaned it all up today, and left them wrapped in a WD40 soaked rag overnight, but I haven't  tried to budge anything yet. Are these new designs as prone to seizing up as the older Carlton ones? The inboard one looks bent to me  :-X

3) Had to take a caliper off today die to a siezed/very stiff piston in the OSR. So i now need to bleed the brakes. Any issues with an easybleed on these?

Omega General Help / 30XE Locking tool loan
« on: 19 November 2013, 15:23:21 »
Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone here is still loaning out a 30XE camshaft locking tool kit?

I've just been looking through the service history on my car. It appears it was last done in March 2007 at 135K miles. It's now nearly 2014, and on 209K miles. So I guess its probably wise to so it before an upcomming 2000 mile trip to the French alps and back.

Vx main dealer has quoted me £200 labour + £170 ish for the parts - she said it's 3.1 hours, but as a special offer to a loyal customer they'll keep it under £400 incl parts. Now I probably can do the job myself if I can be bothered, but I would still need to obtain the locking tool.

I can collect and return anywhere within a 100 mile radius of Yeovil.

Cheers

Omega General Help / A bit of a Prang - help required.
« on: 31 October 2013, 18:15:45 »
Hi,
Had a prang with a Slovakian 44 tonner a week ago in my Omega Elite 3.0 Y reg. Damage to OSF and OSR doors. I've got the ABS Welsh Taffia on the job of repairing it, but I've got a few issues that perhaps someone can help with, basically all the result of school boy errors.

1) After the accident I wound down the drivers door window. Of course - it then wouldn't go back up. It closes about threequaters of the way then hits something hard and the anti-chop-off-your-fingers thing cuts in and winds it down again. I *think* it's hitting part of the door handle, so plan A was to take the doorcard off to take a butchers. That was till school boy error number 2 occurred.

2) After the accident I continued to where I was going - a top secret military base in Lincolnshire. At the main gate I locked the doors (even though the window was half open!) whilst I signed in. Then of course I couldn't get the drivers door to unlock. The lock buttons all pop up, but the drivers door will not open. It did open perfectly normally before I locked it. So now I can't get the door card off to do anything. Worse, I can't get the paint colour code because that's apparently on a sticker in the drivers door shut.

So, before I take an angle grinder to the door skin - does anyone have any ideas on how to unlock an accident damaged drivers door without resorting to butchery? I can see down inside the door through the window gap so if I know what to loop some string around I can perhaps yank it hard enough to open the lock.

Omega General Help / TC73 Mass Airflow Sensor Low
« on: 24 July 2012, 22:35:11 »
Is the 'cure' for this replacement?

3.0L Facelift Auto Omega B Y reg. Story is. Been doing a lot of miles recently on the last day of the last trip, I noticed the EML pulsing rapidly (Mostly on but flickering off at about 2 pulses a second) whilst on light throttle. Give it a bit of wellie and the EML goes out, but it'll come on again when I get stuck behind Auntie Dorris doing 30MPH on a desestricted single carrageway.

I assumed lambda sensor, due to it pulsing on and off. And continued driving for the past week. Have noticed that it's Ok when cold, but after it's warm it'll normally come on at the first bit of coasting. Then more recent'y I've noticed a big flat spot on light acceleration out of idle. So starting to worry about CAT's and EGR's I finally got my backside in gear and did a blink test tonight. Got 12, 73 and 31 on a non running engine. Which suggests MAF sensor.

So do I simply go down the local stealer and order a new one tomorrow, and fit it at the weekend?

Cheers

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Windscreen wiper woes
« on: 25 April 2012, 21:36:44 »
For the past several weeks, the park position of the wiper arms on my daily shed has been getting higher and higher. This morning it was up to about 30 degrees. I'd read this : http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1291058047 : But, the last time I tried to get the wiper arms off I couldn't find my puller. And in any case the LC was in the shed being worked on. So it's a job I've put off and put off.

Got a long trip tomorrow from Zunny Zummerzet to darkest dreary Shropshire. Filled up with Morrisons finest 90 octane on the way home from work, and (obviously unusually for Zunny Zummerset) there was a light sprinkle of rain. Turned the wipers on intermittent, and they parked at 45 degrees afterwards. However, they then stay there, and no amound of wiper stalk waggling will restart them.

Got home and manually forced them back to somewhere close to the correct park position. Then they work, and keep working till you turn them off again. Then then seem to park at a random angle somewhere between 45 and 90 degrees, and won't restart again.  I can force them back down and they work till they next stop.

Given tomorrrows weather forcast is even grimmer than it normally is for the north (i.e. everywhere north of Shepton Mallet) the chances of me getting away withiout working wipers is nill. So, are there any bodges i can do to defeat whatever is going on? Or am I going to have to do the trip in my only other alternative - the old dears 1.0L Corsa Life?

Cheers

Omega General Help / And another thing - Powersounder.
« on: 20 November 2011, 22:36:37 »
I've read the stuff on here about removing the powersounder. I may do that, but I've a question. On the plastic radiator cover there's a pictogram which I take to mean don't disconnect the battery else the powersounder will go off. Fair enough. Then under this is another pictogram which I think means read the manual - then disconnect the battery - and then the powersounder won't go off.

So my question is - is the powersounder telepathetic, and it knows when you've read the manual ;D Or alternatively, What does the manual tell you about removing the battery? I'm stuffed if I can find anything in my copy.

Cheers,
Malcolm

Omega General Help / Rocker Cover Help
« on: 20 November 2011, 20:55:32 »
Guys n Gals,

I attempted a rocker cover gasket change today, and failed. I'm beginning to think this car hates me. I managed to get all the gaskets locally (yes genuine Vx).After two hour of cursing I'd got both rocker covers off. Many thanks to all those who contributed to the OOF guides. However, I still haven't worked out how to get the trumpets out without using excessive force. They're out - but what a pfaff.

Then I started to clean up the rocker covers. At first I thought there weren't any gaskets at all, what with the amount of silicone sealant everywhere. Then I unearthed the groove the gasket sits in, and there it was - brittle as anything. I was starting to feel I'd found the problem. Pulled all the bits of gasket out and continued cleaning out the sealant. Then - bugger.

The grove the gasket sits in is cracked and split on both rocker covers. On the drivers side, the outer lip is completely missing for about 10cm. On the passenger side, it's the inner lip on one of the front corners. I'm reluctant to re-use either rocker cover, because I think the gasket will slip out of the grove in the affected places.

On the plus side, I cleaned up all the breathers. As far as I could tell they weren't blocked. Only a small amount of sludge in the big breather, and next to nothing in the plenium cover ducts.

I think I'm going to need a new pair of rocker covers. I don't have 250 posts on here, so can't put an ad in your parts wanted section. I realise I'm bending the rules, bit has anyone got a good pair of undamaged rocker covers just lying about anywhere? If I have to I'll go to Vauxhall, but I'm betting that I'll get raped. p/n are

Hi Guys,
First post so be gentle. I've recently upgraded from a pre to a post facelift OB. The new one had working satnav on the NCDC2013 untill a few weeks ago when I was instructed to do a U turn on the M3 [smiley=shocked.gif] And ever since, the car has thought it was in Cirencester, when it's actually in Somerset. Also, when the clocks went forward/back/whatever, the time didn't change to BS like the manual said it should. TP/RDS still works.

I think there might be a problem with either the aerial or the wiring, but don't know nuffink about the OB systems.

Picture of the Display :

I don't remember the "GPS" logo in the top right hand corner being highlighted when the system was working. Is this right, or does it indicate a fault?

Picture of the aerial - I think?

Does this unit contain the GPS aerial? If so, how easy to remove & inspect the connectors? On a Carlton its a right pig of a job - basically headlining out.

Picture of the ACDC :

Can I just pull this out once I've found the right combination of hammers to belt it with? I don't have a radio 'code' but I'm not sure the 2013 needs one?

Anyhow, thanks for any help. Solve this one for me and there are about 20 others that need answering - mobile phone, Traffic master etc...

Cheers,
Malcolm
