Omega General Help / Couple of problems with the ex wife's mig.
« on: 23 March 2009, 17:24:12 »
I'm down in Barnstaple visiting the ex-missus at the moment and her Omega has a couple of problems. It's a 1998 2.5 V6 CDX Estate and the first thing is that when I tried to pull the bonnet release, it wasn't releasing the bonnet so gave it a few tugs and the damn lever came off completely. The cable is still attached to the lever and I was able to release the bonnet by getting hold of the whole lever and pulling it. Is this fixable or will it need a new lever?

Second problem I noticed when driving it was that the accelerator pedal appeared to have too much play in it - you need to press it down about 1/2" before feeling the throttle react. Is this a case of adjusting the throttle cable?

Lastly, the temp gauge didn't move until after around 10 mins of driving and even then it only moved just off the minimum mark. My guess is that the thermostat's on it's way it, although the cabin seems to be heating ok.

I'm useless with car mechanics myself but she has got a pretty handy mechanic who works on her car from time to time so just need a bit of advice to identify the problems unless there's anyone if the North Devon area that could help out.

Omega General Help / Wishbone bushes
« on: 08 December 2008, 15:21:47 »
Having had problems with the steering tramlining and bump steering, I paid another visit to WIM on Friday and after a few checks Tony said that the wishbone bushes were worn and needed replacing as the excessive play in them was the cause of the problem.
Am I correct in assuming that this means the complete wishbones will have to be replaced? If so, should I get my garage to use genuine VX wishbones or are pattern one's just as good?

Omega General Help / Rumbling brakes
« on: 19 September 2008, 10:58:21 »
When braking quite heavily from fairly high speed, I've started getting a kind of rumbling noise from my brakes combined with a bit of brake fade. There's no warning coming up that the brake pads are worn but they haven't been changed since I've had the car so they probably haven't been changed for a good couple of years.

Could this mean the pads just want changing or could it be something else?

Omega General Help / Wheel size question
« on: 28 May 2008, 13:37:00 »
Having discovered last night that I've got a slow puncture in my rear tyre I realised that my spare is a standard steel wheel with a 195/65/R15 tyre but my rear wheels are Azev alloys with 265/40/R17 tyres. I'm hoping to get the puncture repaired while I wait, but the question is would I be able to use the spare wheel in an emergency? :-/

Omega General Help / Tyre size issues
« on: 10 April 2008, 13:36:58 »
I've been having a discussion with Albatross and Sipey (that started off in another thread) about the tyre sizes fitted to my wheels.

I have Azev 17" alloys. The fronts are 8J fitted with 235x40x17 tyres and the rears are 10J fitted with 265x40x17 tyres.

Albatross was asking why I have 40 profile tyres fited when the standard size should be 45 in order to keep the rolling radius correct.
So, the issue here is am I using incorrect tyre sizes, and should I be fitting 45's to my rims?

I have to say that my speeds seem to be reasonably accurate when moving with other traffic i.e. 50mph limit on camara sections of motorways etc.

I never thought this was an issue up until now as I'm using the same size tyres that were fitted when I bought the car. :-/

Omega General Help / Can anyone identify this?

I found this piece of plastic in the back of my car and I've no idea what it is or where it comes from. Any ideas?

Omega General Help / Door mirror
« on: 03 March 2008, 17:12:00 »
Some may have read in General Chat about my misfortune with a lorry this morning but I need to ask a couple of questions. It looks like I'm going to need a complete new drivers door mirror, but do VX supply the covers already painted or do they have to be sprayed? It's unlikely I'm going to find one on e-bay or the like thats the correct colour. Also, what sort of cost am I looking at for a complete new unit?

Omega General Help / Summer's come early!!
« on: 22 February 2008, 11:04:02 »
Driving to work this morning glanced at MID and Outside Temp was reading 20 and gradually moved up to 22.5. Now I know it's a bit milder at the moment but I don't think it's being entirely truthful!! ::)

I know the previous owner (Big Rod) had a small issue with a bad connection somewhere near the sensor. Could this be the same or is the sensor cream crackered?

Omega General Help / Cats on the way out?
« on: 15 February 2008, 12:22:33 »
EML came on again yesterday so dropped into my garage to have fault codes read. The diagnosis was that the cats are operating below proper efficiency.

I assume at some point I'll have to get them replaced but my mechanic said to try some Lucas fuel additive (upper cylinder lubricant)which might help as sometimes poor quality fuel can cause the problem.

Anyone had any experience of this stuff? I did use Cataclean a little while ago but not sure if it did any good.

Also, what sort of cost am I looking at to have the cats replaced? I know they are really expensive :'( :'( but not sure how much.

Omega General Help / Rear seat jammed in estate
« on: 28 January 2008, 12:53:08 »
I put the back seats down to move my mates bike yesterday, but when my mate went to put the seat up again he slammed it into place and trapped the seat belt and now the damn seat is jammed solid. The seat release button now has no "click" when you press it although it does spring back up, and the seat belt is jammed solid. Anyone got any idea's on how I can fix this?

I'm sure I can't be the only person this has ever happened to as it's so easy to do. :(

Omega General Help / speedo/rev counter problem
« on: 19 January 2008, 15:33:57 »
A mate of mine at the pub (been trying to get him on here but he hates computers!) has got an S reg Omega 2.0 CDX Estate and his rev counter and speedo have stopped working. Any ideas as to what the fault could be?

Omega General Help / auto gearbox problem
« on: 14 January 2008, 11:47:55 »
I had similar problem a few months but then was ok for a while but its reared up again. When selecting a gear, the selector lights light up like a Christmas tree. When this happens I get 2 warning lights - the TC light and car/spanner symbol and the car goes into limp mode.
However, sometimes the selector lights flicker but then revert to normal and the gearbox is fine.

Could this be bad contacts in the gearbox selector which is somehow telling a sensor there's a problem or could it be more serious?
I'm taking it for a diagnostics check tomorrow but was wondering if anyone has come across this problem before.

Omega General Help / EML light on
« on: 30 October 2007, 09:41:11 »
Driving to work this morning the EML came on, but car seems to be running fine. I know I need to get the fault codes read but I don't know anyone near me that has a Tech2. My local garage that services the car has a diagnostic computer but don't know if that will read sufficient information.

A couple of questions. Is there any reason not to carry on driving with the EML on and is it possible this might be caused by dodgy sensors which I know the Omega can be prone to?

Omega General Help / Part numbers
« on: 24 July 2007, 17:15:57 »
I need to order a cambelt and tensioner kit, water pump and auxilliary belt for my 2002 3.2 MV6 estate. I've looked on Autovaux and I think the part No. for the cambelt kit is AS93172354. Can anyone verify this is the correct one.
Also, I couldn't find a water pump and aux belt listed on their site so can someone tell me what the part numbers for these are and if Autovaux do them even if not listed.

Cheers, Bob

Omega General Help / TC light & loss of auto box
« on: 06 July 2007, 09:41:06 »
Driving to work this morning on dual carriageway and suddenly the TC light and car symbol with spanner came on. When I stopped and then pulled away again, autobox was pulling away in high gear (3rd or 4th) so had to manually use drives 1,2 and 3. Also noticed that sport mode would not work. Anyway, got to work, switched off engine and waited a couple of minutes, restarted engine and the warning lights were no longer on and autobox was back to normal.

Looks like my jinx with cars is still with me :'(  Any ideas what this problem was or is?
