V6 cambelt lock tool...
« on: 06 June 2015, 19:58:59 »

I'm going to purchase this at some point and can get a laser one on t'internet for around £75.

I vaguely remember someone saying the laser one was to be avoided. if ive got that right, whats the problem with this kit? And anyone know what IS the good one to use?

IIRC they were a bit on the vague side when you set them up - though I never saw one in the metal. Sykes Pickavant is the name to look out for ..... which is what I had.

Thanks Jaime, but I thought yours melted when you had your bonfire?  :-\ sorry, I must have got that wrong and really appreciate it  :y

As for the changing of the belt, it was expertly done by you when you kindly popped over. however, I have a not-very-nice noise coming from the engine. and as I wanted to double check I slipped the aux belt off the crank tonight and the noise is coming from the cambelt  :'(

it has always squeaked at start up and ive never worried about it. but now its during driving also and after the last piston and valve meet im thinking sod it, ill fit a new kit to be on the safe side  :-\

Mine is a Laser kit. Seems perfectly adequate. Was about £45 some years ago. Before that I used to hire a tool kit from Autovaux.

I think the belief is, there was either a bad batch, or somebody not very good at it was cloning them.

If it was a bad batch, its been going on for too long, therefore the returns are clearly making it back onto the market.

That's why I'd probably be looking at other brands. If I wanted a Laser one, I'd be buying from a reputable seller (Halfords, GSF, Unipart (or whatever they're called today) etc), and most definitely not egay, Amazon Marketplace or online.

...And after reading the v6 cambelt procedure over and over again, I understand that the position of the rollers is essential for degreeing in / adjusting the cam timing after two turns of the crank.

ill definitely remember to re-tension the belt after adjusting the idlers this time  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

although I think ill do it at the garage with a watchful eye over me  ;D I did ask him and he's done a few so all good

Mine is a BluePoint (Snap-On) kit I purchased for when I did the HG's a couple of weeks ago, it even came with the spanned for the tensioner.... which was handy...

I borrowed the kit off the good AndyB last year, is easy enough to use and do TBH...

Just double check everything is tight after rotating the engine twice....
