Air filters???
« on: 08 October 2010, 14:40:46 »

Hi all,

Had a poke around the engine bay last night checking fulid levels ect. whilst i was there got the airfilter out and looks like i need a new one. I have been tempted in the past with closed induction kits but i dont really want to spend loads and im not after any noise, so i have bought a K&N panel filter instead. only £33 and replaces the existing filter. anyone got one of these and do you feel or see any benifits?

I wouldn't bother Dan, the general opinion here is the genuine Vauxhall one has a bigger surface area. If you want one give me a shout and i'll get it with my trade card :y

Thats ok Pete i can do one at TC for £9.92 + VAT & Postage

As Pete has said they don't make ant difference to the performance and if its the oiled type you run the risk of frying the air mass sensor

Iirc the oil in these filters have been known to contaminate the maf sensor, causing problems.

May be something to watch for.

I'd stick to genuine.  Its massive, and plenty large enough for the engine.

*Note that pattern ones that are the same type as GM ones tend to have about half the surface area of the GM ones.

general advise seems to be standard, i actually ordered a pipercross performance filter and as all you guys have said i will be mindful of the oil. i gave it a good wipe down to remove excess and ill see how i get on. coming back on the M6 last night seems a little sharper in sport mode.

Bear in mind that oiled filters do require some oiling or they are not effective in collecting dust. Best way is little and often. Take it out once a month, wash, dry and oil it sparingly.

Or take the easy route. Keep the standard one and replace every 20k. ;)
