Buying tools in the USA
« on: 08 July 2015, 17:59:11 »

Evening chaps,

I have to confess I've purchased some Snap-on stuff recently  :-[ Stupidly expensive but i got a set of 10-20mm 0 degree loooong wrenches. The whole buying process is in my opinion stupid. I got to register an account with them and you gotta wait fir one guy to turn up (whenever he likes) and seemingly wint come out of his way to deliver them. anyway...

Got a trip to the states in September and I'm wanting to know if Snap-on tools are sold in the ''auto-part stores''? If so I may have to indulge as I assume they'll be a lot cheaper?

anyone?

:)

They're mainly sold off the truck, just like here. And they are still expensive, although like a lot of American stuff, the number in dollars is roughly the same number of pounds.

Don't forget, you've got to get them home.

Webby Im sure you've looked at the Blue Point stuff too....?

Same quality, not as expensive and made by Snap-On but not 100% if they have the same lifetime guarantee...?

Last time was in states found a tool store , which one indulges in , bought an extra holdall for them ..
get to air port - no weight limit but max 2 bags - extra bag + junk left, so still have Ally pipe wrenches and a few other thingys.

Still considerably cheaper though.

I can't fault you for choosing Snap-On. I've reached that point in my life where I am now buying Snap-On tools to replace my cheaper tools.

Mainly because it means MrsDeviator never struggles to find gifts that I would actually want!

With regards import tax, I don't think it includes second hand items or repaired items. Especially if your receipt says USED/REPAIRED or something similar.

As you well know, I don't rate Snap-on based on the fact that they are over priced, there are manufacturers out there who are just as good (and better in many cases) for less money and with similar or better warranty.

I do have some snap-on tools but, there not my first choice.

Consequently, I would be advising to 'buy clever' over here rather than trying to save a few quid on 'a brand' and bring them back.

The only advantage Snap-on have is that they can be bought on the drip.

Years ago someone brought me back some spanners from the States, King Dick they were called, no ideal were they were made or whether they still make them, but really good and strong. Downside was they weren't metric then, probably not an issue now, they still got used and abused though.

Bet it's all still 5/16 and other similar mind bending fractions..
