Question for Astronomers or Clever people!
« on: 15 July 2009, 18:50:43 »

So here in Spain we often have cloudless days and can see the sun and the moon high up in the sky at the same time. Today was no different.

But the moon is "crescent" i.e. not fully visible. Other times the full moon is visible at the same time as the sun.

What (on earth) is causing only part of it to be visible?

Depends where the moon is in relation to the sun.

That would mean the earth is between them, a lunar eclipse. ::)

What you are seeing (or rather, not) is effectively the dark side of the moon (I know I am mad, I've always been mad - No, not that one). Remember that the sun is much further away than the moon so you will only see a small section of the moon which the sun is shining on. The rest of the moon, the bit at the back which you cant see, will be almost fully illuminated.

Couple more whisky's and Ill explain it better...
