Maintenance Guides / Pressure test coolant system with a compressor
« on: 03 January 2011, 19:44:42 »
Razzo did the original maintenance guide on how to pressure test the cooling system. This is just an alternative way of doing the same thing

Razzo's guide: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90598.0

How to pressure test the cooling system with the Plenum removed.

1)Using a compressor to pressurise the cooling system could cause serious damage if you apply to much pressure so before you do anything else turn the pressure down on the compressor
1.2 bar=17psi That's about the limit of what the system can take.

Apart from the compressor and airline you'll need a few bits.
A quick release coupling (makes de-pressurising the system so much easier)
Jubilee clip (My quick release coupling is slightly smaller than the pipe so the original clip wouldn't hold it.
A bung to put into the other coolant pipe. (I originally used a screwdriver until my neighbour gave me the bung you see in the picture)

Remove the two coolant pipes from the plenum.
On the one that comes from the expansion tank put the quick release fitting in it and tighten the jubilee clip to hold it in place.
Place the bung in the other pipe. I found the original clip was enough to hold this in place but if your using something different as a bung then you may need another jubilee clip.

That's about it. you can now gently connect your airline to the coupling and hey presto one pressurised coolant system.

I was trying to find a water leak on my car and had to strip the intake manifold out. I took the precaution of de-pressurising the system every time I started to strip something else off the car. 1 bar isn't a lot of pressure but it's enough to blow something into your eye and hospitals aren't high on my places to visit list.  :y

Omega General Help / Broken down
« on: 22 March 2011, 14:22:00 »
Cars just died on me on the way to work. Had a message on the display saying something like "Automatic Gearbox". Rolled to a halt tried to restart and it's not having it. A quick paper clip test revealed codes 12 and 19.
Is it likely to be the crank sensor or is that just a red herring???

Any help would be much appreciated.

Rich.

Omega General Help / Help me find my leak
« on: 03 January 2011, 12:56:13 »
Without making this to long here is my story.

A few months ago I had to change the oil cooler after it decided to expire. Since then (or very shortly afterwards) I have had a coolant leak. My first thought was that I hadn't got a good seal on the oil cooler cover or the coolant bridge wasn't sealed correctly. A strip down over the last couple of days revealed nothing obvious from the cover or bridge. I needed the engine running to produce the leak.

Today I have managed to pressure test it (@1.2bar) and although the leak is there under pressure I still can not find the source. All I can see is a drip from the block just below the exhaust manifold on the near side.

So far I have ruled out:
1)Oil Cooler cover
2)Coolant bridge
3)Pipes onto Coolant bridge
4)HBV

Anyone got any ideas where else to look?

Thanks for reading

Omega General Help / Oil in the water - possible causes?
« on: 04 October 2010, 19:40:28 »
As the weather has gone a little cooler I tried to use my heater the other day and found it was luke warm at best. Checked HBV which seemed OK so decided to flush the heater matrix out.
When I connected the hose to the matrix outlet it blew an unbelievable amount of mayo out.  Further investigation has found that the whole of the coolant system is contaminated with an alarming amount of mayo. Checking the dipstick the oil level is OK with no signs of mayo but there is a bit inside the filler cap which I noticed a couple of weeks ago when I topped up the oil. I also checked the water level at the same time but as I didn't need to take the cap off the expansion tank I didn't notice if there was a problem then.

This evening I've flushed the coolant system out and the heater matrix (heater now works) and ran the engine with the expansion tank cap removed so I could top the water level up as the water circulated and any trapped air came out. Which was fine until the temperature started to rise as the coolant level then rose rapidly and started to come out of the top of the tank. Temp was not hot enough to open the thermostat.

My first though is head gasket but i would have expected it to pressurise the coolant system right from engine start. So I thought it wise to ask those with far greater knowledge then me before I start to pull the car to bits.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Omega General Help / Cam cover gaskets
« on: 06 February 2010, 22:02:10 »
I'm going to do my leaking cam cover gasket as soon as we get some better weather. I've read all about getting genuine ones rather than pattern ones but I just found these on ebay and wondered what your thoughts were?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180390754142&ru=http://shop.ebay.co.uk:80/%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp4712.m38.l1313%26_nkw%3D180390754142%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1#ht_1339wt_939

It's this bit in the description that caught my eye.

The gaskets supplied are not an Aftermarket gasket but made by Elring Klinger, a supplier to Vauxhall.

Omega General Help / V6 Mis-fire. Down to 3 cylinders???
« on: 15 May 2009, 22:09:09 »
Hi People,

Just got back from work it's raining cats & dogs and dark so can't do a lot until daylight but thought I'd ask for ideas as to where to start looking.

Got in the car to come home and she fired OK but felt a bit rough. Started to drive and I have a judder and lack of power. Feels like a mis-fire but it's got to be 2 or 3 cylinders missing to be this bad.
Seems to be there when the engine is idling and under load but not noticeable when lifting off.
I do have a cam cover leak but the suddenness and severity of the fault kind of makes me think that it's not just the plug holes filling with oil.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated

Omega General Help / Poor cabin fan
« on: 03 August 2008, 09:57:01 »
Hi all,

I've got a problem with the cabin fan (Climate control) on my car. I can hear the fan blowing away but only get what I would describe as a light draft coming out of the vents. Same thing if I put the windscreen de-mister on just a little draft. Tried resetting it using auto and off to no avail I can hear somthing happen but it doesn't cure the fault. Anyone got any ideas as to where to start looking.

Many Thanks

Rich

General Car Chat / MOT Tomorrow
« on: 11 August 2010, 22:38:57 »
Wish me luck. The miggy is off for it's MOT first thing in the morning. For the first time in years I've spent some money on it instead of just putting it in and seeing what it fails on. So fingers crossed that it will go straight through.

General Discussion Area / Not happy - Dented Miggy
« on: 01 April 2011, 20:18:16 »
Just on my way to pick the little one up from school, slowed down while car in front turned right and BANG! The person behind me didn't pay enough attention and used my car as a brake  >:( Impact was I guess only about 15 MPH but it's wrecked the bumper and I can't get the boot to stay shut. Damage doesn't look bad but the Miggy isn't worth that much now so fear it may get written off.  :'(

The good (and most important) news is apart from a slight bit of whiplash on my part everyone's OK. Their insurance has already phoned and accepted liability so shouldn't take to long to get sorted.

For once I'm giving a big thumbs up to my bank  :y
I suddenly realised yesterday that my debit card expired on the last day of 2010.
I rang them up at 5.02pm according to the log on my phone. This afternoon I received a replacement :o
I still can't work out how they got it to me that fast but well done to them  :y

General Discussion Area / Oil stained tarmac.
« on: 08 October 2010, 18:56:51 »
After my recent discovery of a deceased oil cooler I've now ended up with oil/water (mayo) stains on the drive.

Anyone got anything they recommend for getting rid of the stains without melting the tarmac?

Thanks

Rich
