If they are VX ones then the socket you need is 13/16" once you have removed the spinney thingy. Importantly you need to grind the chamfer of the end of the socket,  this means that the "teeth" that normally grip a nut will start to bite onto the locking nut as soon as it starts to hammer on.  This gave me enough of a purchase to remove one that needed a scaffold tube as an extension to my ratchet before it gave in!!!!. Dont you just love previous owners!
  Best of luck mate.

Hi Ricardo,

Yes thery are VX ones. and as many others have already said. I will not be replacing them with VX ones. I have got some from a motor factor for £20. I will be getting one of the locking nut removal sockets with a reverse thread from Halfords when they get some more into stock on Tuesday - then I'll have another go. What a sod!

Hi guys,

Spent two hours this afternoon with a bloody great hammer, some smaller sockets to bash over the locking wheel nuts and all I managed to do was remove plenty of lacquer from around the nut hole (ooer, sounds a bit rude!).

The locking nuts do have the rotating sleeve, but I managed to chisel off this ring dead easily with a screwdriver!! However, I just couldn't get any of my sockets to bash over the nut and grip on. I was worried about doing damage to the wheel, or knowing my luck, flattening my fingers I was hitting it so hard!

Looks like I will be trying the halfords option suggested by Elite Pete.

Thanks again for all the tips.

I will let you know how things go!

Cheers,

Dave.

Hi chaps,

Thanks for such swift assistance.

I have to say, I do like the thought of hammering a slightly undersized socket over the nut. Each hammer will symbolically wipe the smile off the Vauxhall dealership idiot's smug little face. Tee Hee!

Also, it sounds like it would work!

Thanks.

Dave.

Hi guys,

Sorry for absence - not been here for a while - very, very long story (not prison though).

I wonder if any of you are able to help.

When I bought my lovely burgundy Omega from an independent garage last July it never occurred to me that they should have given me a locking wheel nut socket. Doh!

Guess what! slow puncture for the last month or so but thought I had better get it repaired. Got to tyre place and no chance of them getting wheels off without it.

Went to local Vauxhall garage and they might just as well have said 'tough s**t'. Best they can do is drill them out for £140 +VAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My friendly local garage could do it, but they reckon on about 2 hours labour as well - £100 ish !!!!

I am more skint than a skint thing at the moment and wondered if by some small miracle anyone out there could lend me a locking wheel nut socket which matches the one I have posted an image of on photobucket. The link to the picture is at the bottom of this text.

I will happily pay for special delivery or other courier costs to get it to me and back to you safely if anyone can help, or even drive to where you are and borrow it for 10 minutes - hopefully not the Outer Hebrides !!

If it helps, my car is a Vreg, year 2000 Omega CD 2.5td saloon.

Any help or ideas greatly appreciated.

Omega General Help / best oil for my car
« on: 16 November 2006, 13:01:03 »
Hi guys,

Haven't been here for a few weeks - been so flipping busy - where does time go!?

Need to top up my oil, but car was serviced by independant garage just before I bought it in July, so not sure what oil they used.

What's the best oil to top up my year 2000 (facelift) 2.5td saloon, or should I just replace the lot.

I know what it says in the handbook, but often others know better!

Cheers,

Dave.

Omega General Help / exhaust mid section
« on: 18 October 2006, 19:44:34 »
Hi everyone.

Heard a funny clunking noise on my meega today - even had to turn off the stereo for a better idea of where it was coming from!  :(

Had a look underneath and the back box is merrily swinging left to right, having completely come away from the mid-section. There are several holes in the mid-section and it looks like the flange where the mid meets the back box has just corroded away from the mid, so the back box looks intact and OK.

It is for a 2.5td facelift, Vreg year 2000 saloon.

I guess it will be down to ATS or Kwik-Fit in the morning, or do any of you experts know of any stunning deals that can be found, bearing in mind that I am in Gloucester.

Any idea what I might be expected to pay for this so I can steel myself for the bill !!  :'(

Thanks a lot guys.

Dave.

Hi everyone.

Thought I'd add my tuppence-worth!

Year 2000 (facelift) Vreg 2.5TD saloon
Automatic
Trye size: 225/55/R16

Code number:

043       3
            24060

But what do they mean!

I'd like to be able to find out which gearbox is fitted, the R25 or R35 model (I think that's the numbers of them?)

Does anyone out there know??
 :)

Thanks for such a comprehensive guide Ronald McB.

Are AR35's easy enough to come by and what sort of cost is it likely to be. And what about the bellhousing - is that easy enough to get hold of?

Is fitting all this a DIY job for a novice like me or if a garage job, how many hours labour do you reckon on.

The power upgrade Omegatoy has achieved sounds highly entertaining - must do the same to mine!

Thanks for all the help so far.

Dave.

Hi Dave, I've just refitted my gearbox and I noticed that there is a green ID plate on the left hand side of the box about half way along. You should be able to read this in situ. I'm assuming yours might be the same??

Cheers Jim

Hi Jim,

Left hand side is nearside isn't it!?

What does it say on your green ID plate ?

Thanks.

Dave.

Omega General Help / Which greabox do I have
« on: 28 September 2006, 11:06:25 »
Hi everyone.

I have a year 2000 facelift Omega 2.5TD CD AUTOMATIC (BMW engine) and have a gearbox query.

I understand that there were two different auto boxes fitted to these, I think they are called AR25 and AR35, but can't be sure.

I am interested in increasing the performance of my car as I understand that the BMW engine was de-tuned quite a bit when put in the Omega.

I understand that the '35' one is the better one to have if I increase power as it is able to better handle the increase in torque.

Is any of this true, or am I dreaming.

If this is the case, how can I tell which gearbox I have fitted. Is there a visual way I can find out, or can I tell from the chassis number or any other associated documentation I have for the car.

Any help appreciated.

Great Forum by the way - managed to upgrade to cruise following advice on this site. £8 for the stalk - then plug and play - wahey - worked straight away. Wouldn't have ever thought of trying until I joined this site - Thanks!

Dave.

Sorry to hear that you have to get it enable.

I was dead jammy and managed to buy an indicator stalk with cruise buttons and the wiper stalk with computer buttons as a pair on Ebay for £8.00 plus £4.00 postage!!

Plugged it in and wahey..... it worked.

Don't mean to gloat - I think I was just lucky.

Fitting it was much easier than I had expected and I was also helped by some top tips via this excellent forum - thanks to all.

It seems odd that some cars come already enabled, whilst others are not - there's consistency for you!

Hope you get it working soon, it is an excellent feature which I have always made use of in other cars I have owned.

Cheers,

Dave.

Yeay, very chuffed that it's working.

Whether it was two wire, or 4 wire - I haven't got a clue - didn't count them. I rather innocently plugged it in and hoped for the best!

The only reason I disconnected the battery is because others with greater knowledge of these matters than me suggested it was a good idea.

Thanks again.

Dave.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the tips I got for adding cruise to my car.

I was amazed to have bought both the Indicator stalk (with cruise controls) and wiper stalk with computer controls as a pair for £8.00 off Ebay, yes £8.00.

I disconnected the battery, took about 2 minutes to take the plastic casings from around the steering column, 20 seconds to remove stalk, another 60 seconds to fit replacement stalk - once I had found the additional connector which was trying to hide! Another 3 minutes to refit the plastic casing - a little trickier to refit around the rubber grommits. Re-connect battery and reset the one touch windows - the stereo just worked as usual, no need to enter radio-code!

Everything done in less than 10 minutes - amazing!

Now for the scary bit - will it work.

Started her up and drove in the direction of the nearest dual carriageway. Got up to 65mph - hit the switch and bu**er me - IT WORKS - YIPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am chuffed to bits. I have had cruise on my last few cars and really missed it, so to be able to get it working on my car for £8.00 within 10 minutes seems incredible - I guess I'm lucky that my car was already enabled.

Anyway, thanks again, especially Nixoro, who was first to pitch in with help - I really, really appreciate everyone's help.

Dave.
