Fuel pump issue ? is it fubared ?
« on: 28 February 2021, 09:53:42 »

Hi All . .  .not been on here much latley  . . .long story  . . . but have an issue . .

 2001 2.6 Estate . . .     3  days ago used the car for a 50 mile round trip , all running perfectly.

Then 2 days ago  went to use car and although it fires a revs to about 1000rpm it then cuts out after about 1 sec . Tried to re start and same thing happens several times.

Seem to remember advice on here was to give the underside of the tank a thump . . .  did so  . . and car started an ran perfectly  :-\    There are no warning lights on .

Same happened yesterday  . . .had to thump the tank  after it had been left overnight.

Assume this is a fuel pump issue  . . .is replacememnt the answer or can they be serviced . ?   TIA   AL

Serviceable in that you can replace just the pump rather than the whole swirl pot assembly
pump clicky 9196213 is showing for caravan (estate) and saloon

symptoms point to the pump
the fuel pump uses fuel to lubricate itself ,so running out of fuel thus running the pump dry can kill it  :(
Carltons suffered badly with poor electrical connection to the pump plug
fuel pump relay on Omega is a very simple relay, easy to get at and bypass for test purposes /
also worth checking you don't have any immobilizer stored codes

Is replacing just the pump fairly straight forward . . . as in get access to whole pump assembly through estate load area floor, take pump out of "swirl pot"  , replace and reassemble / :-\

Thanks for your reply. :y

No codes showing Dave.  The fact that thumping the tank lets the car start and run fine  must point to it being the pump. . . do you agree.    My diagnosis at first was  . . crank sensor  or fuel pump .

Or if money is tight a LUCAS pump £21.16
£2 extra for first class post  ;)

pretty simple ,does require taking the old pump out of the swirl pot assembly and putting the new one in ,but that's not hard , i'll see if i can find a youtube vid of a similar procedure ,doubt there's an omega video

pump lives in this type of "swirl pot" assembly (example image)

The internal hose clamps are probably single use, but that's easily sorted.
The swirl pot clips together, and is old plastic so a bit of care is necessary.
The actual pump is a pretty standard part and shouldn't cost much.

Yes so do I, along with ones suitable for radiator and heater hoses.

As I read it. . There are saloon and estate types  . The £21 Lucas one is listed as not suitable for estate.  Same company do estate version of Lucas one for £29  can any confirm there are 2 types please?

For the £8 difference I'd buy the one they list for estates without a second thought.
