Took a couple of photos after sunset from 90m above the corner of the rugby club field we just for a meet last year.

Given its not exactly a cutting edge camera, and it was very low light, I think its come out surprisingly well.

I had hoped to film some fireworks, but seems nobody is really doing any...   ...and my fingers were getting a bit chilly ;D

You say it's not an expensive camera, but if you zoom in even on the lower definition one, the detail is amazing. We won't be able to move if these drones become everyday equipment, esp with high res cameras available now.

That was taken from a craft that falls into one of the categories that I have to jump through all the CAA hoops (basically, pay them £9 a year, and take a multiple quiz online exam* every 3 years, whereby spelling your name correct means you pass.

DJI launched a new mini drone - DJI Mini 2 - on Thursday morning (and I ordered one at 8am, and Argos delivered it just before 4pm, so some people can do online well) which has essentially the same camera sensor and bitrate, but being under 250g means you don't need to jump through any CAA bullshit.  I didn't use that tonight as its a bit windy here once up above the treeline.

* Except I haven't, as I'm exempt ;D. Mrs TB passed it with 100% though.

Fireworks 'night' continues here. The dog has stopped shaking and panting now, I think she's catatonic.  :-\

....a new mini drone....

A few months ago I bought a mini drone off ebay for 35 quid.   :)

After a bit of trouble getting the app on my phone to sync with the controller and drone I got it into the air four times....

The first time it lifted off about 2 feet and promptly crashed.  ::)

The second time I managed a loop around the garden at about waist height.  :y

The third time feeling confident I decided on a bit of height, but the wind took it over the neighbours house and crashed it into the street.  :o  ( I live on a steep hill and the neighbours roof ridge is lower than the top of my garden, so I wasn't stupidly high.  ;) )

And the fourth and last time I crashed it into a shrub at about waist height and one of the rotors got caught in a twig and burnt the motor out.  :(

So that was that and all in about an hour!  ;D

I have thought about getting one to pass the time when Im on day shifts at work. We have 27 acres of land I could fly it around.
I suspect though that my experience would be very similar to yours.  ;D

Yes, the toy ones are a handful. Some aren't even stabilised - I had a micro one like that that I lost somewhere in one of Gixer's trees. 3 or 4 years later, we still aint found it ;D

Stabilised, GPS and lidar equipped ones are easy enough for anyone :). But suddenly you are going from that £50 toy territory to a more significant cost.

The one I used to take those photos, a DJI Mavic 2 Zoom, has vision sensors all around it that make it quite difficult to crash it into things in daylight.

Walked the dog & met a new neighbour walking hers if only I was 30 years younger, what a stunning looking young lady.

Great view of the lights of "Downtown Brackley".  :y
Thanks :)

I had noted, more from the video footage I took where I flew along the northern edge of the town, is how much better the old sodium street lights are at illuminating the roads and pavements compared to the modern fangled LED ones.  The corner of Brackley nearest the camera is the only area on the Northern side yet to be "upgraded" to LED, but the video footage clearly shows its the best illuminated.

I know the sodium ones cause other unwanted effects, including light pollution (which I suspect is an easy fix) and higher energy requirements (now we can't piss off the do-gooders), but from what I've seen of the LED ones here, maybe a better option is to simply not bother with streetlights?

When they converted ours to LED a few years ago they spent thousands relocating all of the streetlights and told us that the new locations would provide better overall lighting.  :)

Now they turn them off at midnight!  ;D

I know that in Horsham District, the energy savings of the new lights not only paid for the new lights, but also the installation costs.

They do leave them on all night now though as there was a spike in ne'erdowell activity when they were turned off at midnight and it was cheaper to leave them on than pay the extra policing costs ::)
